Chapter 3 - THE MAN BEHIND THE WHEELCHAIR

Adeline learned quickly.

Nico hated three things.

Being treated like a victim.

People touching his wheelchair without permission.

And anyone feeling sorry for him.

“Again.”

Adeline stood beside him during physical therapy.

Nico looked annoyed.

“I said I’m done.”

“And I said again.”

He stared at her.

“You always talk to your patients like this?”

“No.”

“Then why me?”

“Because you’re not weak.”

The answer surprised him.

Most people avoided saying anything honest.

They either looked at him with pity

or fear.

Adeline did neither.

She treated him like a person.

That bothered him.

But secretly

he respected it.

“You know,” Nico said, “most nurses try to make me comfortable.”

Adeline adjusted his medication schedule.

“I’m not here to make you comfortable.”

His eyes narrowed.

“What are you here for?”

“To make sure you survive.”

That answer stayed with him.

Because nobody had said that before.

They said:

“You’ll be okay.”

“You’re strong.”

“Everything happens for a reason.”

Empty words.

Adeline gave him reality.

And somehow, reality felt better.

But after two weeks, she noticed something strange.

Nico’s medication records did not match his symptoms.

A certain pill was making him weaker.

More tired.

More confused.

She checked the bottle.

The label looked normal.

But something felt wrong.

One night, after everyone went to sleep, Adeline returned to the medical cabinet.

She opened the bottle.

Then stopped.

The pills inside were different.

Her heart started beating faster.

Someone had replaced his medication.

She took pictures.

Documented everything.

The next morning, she confronted Nico.

“Who handles your medication?”

He looked confused.

“Usually Camille.”

Adeline became quiet.

“Why?”

“She likes taking care of things.”

Adeline looked at him.

“Nico
”

Something in her voice made him stop.

“What?”

She wanted to tell him.

But she knew accusations without proof could destroy everything.

“Nothing.”

But Nico noticed.

He always noticed.

“You’re hiding something.”

“No.”

“Yes, you are.”

Their eyes met.

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then Nico said quietly:

“Everyone in this house hides something.”

Adeline looked at him.

“What do you mean?”

His face became serious.

“I mean
”

He looked toward the closed library door.

“I stopped knowing who I could trust.”

Before Adeline could answer—

A loud crash came from upstairs.

Both of them looked up.

Someone was inside Nico’s bedroom.

And they were not supposed to be there.
