Chapter 8 - THE TRUTH ABOUT THE CRASH

Nico listened to the recording twice.
The second time, he didnât move.
No anger.
No reaction.
That scared Adeline more than yelling would have.
âNicoâŠâ
He held up his hand.
âPlay it again.â
She did.
Camilleâs voice filled the room.
âIf he refuses to sign, we make sure he believes he has no choice.â
Marcus answered.
âYouâre sure this will work?â
The recording stopped.
Nico stared ahead.
âShe knew.â
Adeline sat quietly.
âKnew what?â
âAbout my accident.â
Her expression changed.
âYou think she was involved?â
âI donât know.â
He looked at the wheelchair.
âBut I know she knew things she shouldnât have known.â
Adeline remembered something.
âWhat about the crash report?â
Nico looked at her.
âWhat?â
âDid anyone investigate?â
âOf course.â
âAnd?â
He became silent.
That silence was the answer.
âNico.â
He looked away.
âThe brakes failed.â
Adeline frowned.
âOn a car like yours?â
âYes.â
âDid anyone question it?â
âPeople did.â
âAnd?â
âPeople stopped.â
âWhy?â
Nicoâs face hardened.
âBecause my family told them to.â
The words shocked her.
âYour family?â
He nodded.
âEveryone thinks being powerful means youâre protected.â
A bitter smile appeared.
âSometimes it just means people know how to hide things better.â
That night, Adeline decided something.
She was not just going to expose Camille.
She was going to find out what happened to Nico.
But before she could beginâ
Wes called.
She answered immediately.
âHey buddy.â
Silence.
âWes?â
Then she heard a strange voice.
A man.
âYou should have listened.â
Adeline froze.
âWho is this?â
No answer.
Then the phone disconnected.
She stood up.
Her entire body went cold.
âNicoâŠâ
He looked at her.
âWhat happened?â
May you like
Her eyes filled with fear.
âThey have Wes.â
