Chapter 8 - The Man Who Came Back

Nobody spoke.

Nobody could.

Emma stared at the photograph.

Her father.

Michael Carter.

Alive.

The picture was clear.

Not a memory.

Not an old photograph.

A recent image.

Taken three days ago.

“That’s impossible.”

Emma’s voice broke.

“My father died.”

The officer looked uncomfortable.

“We thought so too.”

Daniel grabbed the photograph.

“Where was this taken?”

The officer looked at him.

“An abandoned warehouse outside the city.”

Daniel’s expression changed.

“You found him?”

“No.”

A pause.

“We found evidence someone was there.”

Emma looked at the picture again.

Her father was standing beside a car.

And next to him…

Was Max.

The same man from the wedding.

The man who disappeared.

The man everyone believed was dead.

Emma felt dizzy.

“So Max and my father were alive?”

The officer nodded.

“That appears to be the case.”

Daniel looked worried.

“This changes everything.”

Emma turned.

“You keep saying that.”

Her voice became cold.

“But you always know more than me.”

Daniel looked down.

“I deserve that.”

“Yes, you do.”

For the first time, Daniel had no defense.

No explanation.

Only guilt.

Then Emma noticed something.

The photograph had writing on the back.

She turned it over.

Five words were written in black ink.

“DON’T TRUST THE WRONG CARTER.”

Her heart stopped.

Wrong Carter.

There were only two Carters left.

Her.

And her mother.

Emma looked toward Sarah.

Her mother was crying.

“No…”

Emma whispered.

“What does that mean?”

Sarah shook her head.

“I don’t know.”

But her reaction was too fast.

Emma saw it.

“You do know.”

Sarah looked away.

“Mom.”

The room became heavier.

Finally, Sarah spoke.

“Your father found out something about my family.”

Emma froze.

“Your family?”

Sarah nodded.

“My maiden name wasn’t Carter.”

Daniel looked shocked.

“What?”

Sarah whispered:

“Before I married your father…”

She took a deep breath.

“I was a Whitmore.”

Emma felt the world stop.

The Whitmores.

The family that had competed against Carter Industries for decades.

“The same Whitmores connected to the company?”

Sarah nodded.

“Yes.”

Emma stepped back.

“Why didn’t you tell Dad?”

Sarah cried.

“Because I was afraid he would never forgive me.”

Daniel suddenly looked at the door.

Someone was outside.

A shadow moved.

He immediately stood.

“Who’s there?”

Nobody answered.

Then the door slowly opened.

A man stepped inside.

Older.

Tired.

But alive.

Emma dropped the photograph.

Because she knew that face.

She had seen it thousands of times.

In old pictures.

In memories.

In dreams.

“Dad?”

Michael Carter looked at his daughter.

And whispered:

“Emma…”

Everyone froze.

Then he said:

“You cannot trust your mother.”

Sarah screamed:

“Michael, no!”

May you like

And Emma realized…

The truth was far more dangerous than she imagined.
