Chapter 2 - The Man Who Was Never A Stranger

Nobody moved.

The wedding hall that had been filled with music and laughter only minutes ago now felt like a courtroom.

Everyone was waiting for Daniel Hayes to say something.

Anything.

But he stood frozen.

His eyes were locked on the screen.

On the face of the man who had been dead for eight years.

Michael Carter.

Emma’s father.

“Daniel…”

Emma’s voice was barely above a whisper.

“Tell me he’s lying.”

Daniel looked at her.

For a moment, she saw the man she loved.

The man who brought her coffee every morning.

The man who stayed beside her when she cried after her father’s funeral.

The man who held her hand and promised:

“I’ll never let you go through pain alone.”

But now…

He looked like someone who had been caught running from a truth he could never escape.

“Emma, listen to me.”

She laughed quietly.

Not because it was funny.

Because she was hurt.

“Listen to you?”

She pointed at the screen.

“My dead father just told me you were the reason he disappeared.”

The guests whispered.

Emma’s mother covered her mouth.

Daniel stepped closer.

“Your father didn’t tell you everything.”

Those words made Emma stop.

“What does that mean?”

Daniel stayed silent.

Emma’s eyes narrowed.

“You knew him.”

Another silence.

“You knew my father before we met.”

Daniel looked down.

And that was his answer.

Emma felt like the floor disappeared beneath her feet.

“How long?”

Daniel swallowed.

“Emma…”

“How long did you know him?”

“Eight years.”

The room exploded with shocked voices.

Emma stepped back.

Eight years.

The exact amount of time since her father vanished.

“You met him the same year he disappeared?”

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Yes.”

Her heart broke in a way she had never felt before.

Not because he knew her father.

Because he hid it.

“You let me believe you were just some stranger who came into my life.”

“I wanted to tell you.”

“But you didn’t.”

“I was afraid.”

Emma stared at him.

“Afraid of what?”

Before Daniel could answer, the video continued.

Michael’s voice came through the speakers.

“Emma, if Daniel is standing beside you when you watch this…”

A pause.

“He already knows what happened.”

Daniel immediately reached for the laptop.

“No.”

Emma moved in front of it.

“No, you don’t get to stop this.”

Her voice shook.

“But you do get to explain.”

Daniel looked at the screen.

And for the first time…

Emma saw something she had never seen before.

Regret.

The video continued.

“Daniel was not always the enemy.”

Emma froze.

Not always?

“What does that mean?”

Her father continued.

“He was the first person who tried to help me.”

Daniel looked away.

Emma noticed.

“So why are you afraid?”

Daniel whispered:

“Because I failed him.”

The words hung in the air.

Then the video suddenly glitched.

The screen went black.

A message appeared.

FILE ONE COMPLETE.

Emma stared.

“There are more files?”

Daniel didn’t answer.

And that terrified her.

Because she realized something.

The memory card was not a message.

It was evidence.

And her father had prepared it because he knew one day…

The truth would have to be found.

Emma clicked the second file.

The screen loaded.

A date appeared.

Eight years earlier.

The day her father disappeared.

And then…

A second person entered the recording.

May you like

A person Emma never expected to see.

Her own father was not alone that night.
