Chapter 1 - The Necklace That Stopped A Wedding

“Don’t touch that necklace.”
The groom’s voice was so sharp that the entire wedding hall went silent.
For a second, nobody moved.
Not the guests.
Not the photographer.
Not even the violinist standing near the flower wall.
Everyone had been smiling just moments earlier.
They thought they were watching the happiest moment of Emma Carter’s life.
The woman she had loved for years was finally about to become her husband.
But now…
Something was wrong.
Emma was still kneeling in front of Daniel Hayes.
Her white wedding dress spread across the marble floor.
Her hands were trembling.
Not because she was nervous.
Because of the way Daniel was looking at her.
Like he had just seen a ghost.
“Daniel?”
Emma slowly stood up.
“What’s wrong?”
Daniel stared at the necklace around her neck.
The same red necklace she had worn for almost ten years.
The necklace her father gave her on her eighteenth birthday.
The necklace she wore when she graduated.
The necklace she wore when she buried her father.
The necklace she wore every day because it was the last thing she had from him.
But today…
There was something different.
A small silver capsule was attached beneath the red stone.
Emma touched it.
“I found this hidden inside the necklace this morning,” she said quietly.
“I thought maybe my father left something behind.”
Daniel’s face changed.
Only for a second.
But Emma noticed.
She had spent five years loving this man.
She knew every small expression on his face.
The way he smiled when he was hiding stress.
The way he looked away when he didn’t want to answer a question.
And right now…
Daniel was afraid.
“Give it to me,” he said.
Emma blinked.
“What?”
“The capsule.”
His voice became lower.
“Emma, just give it to me.”
The guests exchanged confused looks.
Her mother, sitting in the front row, slowly stood.
“Daniel, what is going on?”
Daniel ignored her.
His eyes never left the necklace.
“Emma, please.”
That word hurt more than his command.
Please.
Not because he cared.
Because he was desperate.
Emma stepped backward.
“No.”
Daniel froze.
“No?”
She shook her head.
“If this is just some meaningless old thing…”
She held the capsule tightly.
“Then why are you scared?”
The question hit him harder than anyone expected.
The room became completely silent.
Daniel opened his mouth.
But no words came out.
Emma looked around.
The man she was about to marry was standing in front of her.
The man she trusted.
The man who held her when she cried after losing her father.
The man who promised her:
“I will always protect you.”
But now…
He was the one person trying to stop her from discovering the truth.
A cold feeling moved through her chest.
“Daniel…”
Her voice became softer.
“What is inside this?”
He looked away.
That was enough.
Emma knew.
Whatever was hidden inside that capsule…
Daniel knew about it.
She turned toward the table where the wedding planner had left a laptop.
“Emma, don’t.”
This time, Daniel sounded frightened.
Not angry.
Frightened.
She opened the capsule.
Inside was a tiny memory card.
Her fingers shook as she picked it up.
A memory card.
Something so small.
Something that could fit between two fingers.
But somehow…
It felt heavier than anything she had ever held.
The wedding photographer lowered his camera.
Nobody was taking pictures anymore.
Everyone was watching.
Emma inserted the card into the laptop.
The screen stayed black for several seconds.
Then…
A video appeared.
The image was old.
The quality was poor.
The camera shook slightly.
And then a familiar voice filled the wedding hall.
Emma stopped breathing.
Because she knew that voice.
Her father.
Michael Carter.
The man who had died eight years earlier.
The man she thought had left her forever.
The man she had cried for every night after losing him.
The recording showed him sitting in a dark room.
His face looked tired.
Serious.
Like he had been carrying a secret for a long time.
Then he looked directly into the camera.
“Emma…”
Her knees almost gave out.
She covered her mouth.
“Dad…”
Everyone stared at the screen.
Michael took a deep breath.
“If you are watching this…”
He paused.
His eyes became filled with sadness.
“It means Max finally managed to come back.”
Emma frowned.
Max?
She had never heard that name before.
Daniel suddenly stepped forward.
“Turn it off.”
Nobody moved.
“Emma, turn it off right now.”
But she couldn’t.
Because her father was still speaking.
“There is something you need to know about the man standing beside you today.”
Emma slowly turned her head.
Toward Daniel.
Daniel’s face had lost all color.
Her heart started beating faster.
Michael continued.
“I spent years trying to find the truth.”
The video shook.
Then her father looked behind the camera.
Like he was checking if someone was there.
“When Max returns, he will tell you he changed.”
A long pause.
“He will tell you he regrets what happened.”
Emma felt a chill.
Daniel whispered:
“Emma…”
But she didn’t look at him.
She was staring at the screen.
Because her father’s next words were meant for her.
“Do not believe him.”
The entire wedding hall gasped.
Emma felt tears running down her face.
She looked at Daniel.
The man she planned to spend her entire life with.
“Why would my father say that?”
Daniel didn’t answer.
And that silence was more terrifying than any confession.
Then the video changed.
The camera moved.
Someone walked into the room.
Only half of his face was visible.
But Emma recognized him immediately.
Her hand flew to her mouth.
Because standing next to her father in the recording…
Was Daniel.
Her fiancé.
Eight years earlier.
Before she ever met him.
Before he ever told her he loved her.
Before he ever promised to protect her.
Daniel was already connected to her father’s secret.

And then Michael Carter said the sentence that destroyed the wedding forever:
“Emma… the man you are about to marry is the reason I disappeared.”
