Chapter 7 - The Final Truth

Emma stared at the small memory card in her mother’s hand.
It was tiny.
Almost nothing.
But somehow, it carried the weight of eight years of lies.
Eight years of unanswered questions.
Eight years of wondering why her father disappeared without saying goodbye.
“Mom…”
Emma’s voice trembled.
“Why did Dad hide this?”
Her mother, Sarah Carter, looked down.
Because she already knew.
This was the moment she had been afraid of.
“I didn’t want you to carry his pain.”
Emma felt anger rise.
“My pain?”
She stepped closer.
“Mom, I spent eight years thinking Dad abandoned us.”
Tears filled Sarah’s eyes.
“I know.”
“No, you don’t.”
Emma shook her head.
“You had answers. You knew something happened. You knew Daniel knew him.”
Sarah looked at Daniel.
“I was protecting you.”
Emma laughed bitterly.
“Everyone keeps saying that.”
She pointed around the room.
“Everyone keeps saying they lied because they wanted to protect me.”
Her voice cracked.
“But nobody asked what it would feel like to find out my entire life was built on secrets.”
Nobody spoke.
Because she was right.
Sarah slowly walked toward the laptop.
“Your father made this video for one reason.”
She inserted the memory card.
“He knew one day the truth would come out.”
The screen turned on.
Another video appeared.
Michael Carter was sitting in the same room.
But this time…
He looked scared.
Not worried.
Scared.
Emma’s breathing slowed.
Her father looked directly into the camera.
“Sarah…”
He said her mother’s name.
“I'm sorry.”
Sarah covered her mouth.
The video continued.
“If Emma is watching this, it means I failed to keep her away from this mess.”
Emma felt tears fall.
Michael continued.
“First, I need her to understand something.”
He paused.
“Daniel did not destroy our family.”
Everyone looked at Daniel.
His eyes closed.
Like hearing those words hurt.
Emma stared at him.
“What?”
Michael continued.
“Daniel was the only person who tried to save me.”
The room became silent.
Emma looked confused.
“But you said he was involved.”
Michael nodded in the video.
“Yes.”
He leaned forward.
“He was involved because I asked him to be.”
Emma froze.
The truth was changing.
Everything she believed was falling apart.
Michael continued.
“Eight years ago, I discovered someone inside my company was stealing money.”
The video showed papers.
Documents.
Bank records.
Names.
“I needed someone young enough to move without being noticed.”
Michael looked into the camera.
“Daniel helped me investigate.”
Emma slowly turned toward Daniel.
“You were investigating?”
Daniel nodded.
“Yes.”
“Then why didn’t you tell me?”
His eyes filled with regret.
“Because the person we were investigating…”
He stopped.
Emma waited.
“Was someone you loved.”
A cold feeling moved through her.
Michael’s voice continued.
“I discovered the person behind everything.”
A pause.
“And I never expected it would be someone from my own family.”
The video suddenly froze.
The screen went black.
FILE THREE COMPLETE.
Emma stared.
“Someone from my family?”
Daniel looked at her.
And before he could speak…
The door opened.
A police officer entered.
His expression was serious.
“Emma Carter?”
“Yes?”
The officer looked at Daniel.
Then back at her.
“We found something.”
Emma stood.
“What?”
The officer held up a folder.
“Your father’s missing investigation file.”
Emma’s heart raced.
“But my father disappeared eight years ago.”
The officer nodded.
“That’s why this is impossible.”
He opened the folder.
Inside was a photograph.
A recent photograph.
Taken three days ago.
Emma looked at it.
And her blood turned cold.

Because the man in the picture…
Was her father.
