Chapter 7 - What Her Grandfather Had Hidden

Caldwell Logistics was worth nearly nine hundred million dollars.
Claire owned only a minority interest.
Or so she believed.
Richard explained the truth.
Thomas Caldwell had quietly reorganized the company before his death.
A controlling block of shares had been placed inside a dormant trust.
Claire was the sole beneficiary.
The ownership would activate automatically when she turned thirty-two.
Her birthday was six weeks away.
Richard needed control before then.
Claire finally understood the urgency.
The wedding trap.
The guardianship papers.
The financial authority.
Everything had a deadline.
“You could have bought the shares.”
Richard laughed.
“Your grandfather made them nontransferable without beneficiary approval.”
“So you needed my signature.”
“We needed your legal authority.”
Claire glanced toward Vanessa.
“And she agreed to all of this?”
Vanessa looked away.
Richard answered.
“Family protects family.”
Claire almost laughed.
“You destroyed your son’s marriage.”
“My son forgot why he married you.”
Claire felt the words.
Richard continued.
“He became sentimental.”
“He helped you tonight.”
“He also copied my ledger.”
Claire looked at the envelope.
“So that’s what you want.”
“I want both.”
Richard pushed the documents toward her.
“Sign.”
“No.”
Richard’s expression hardened.
“You have a child coming.”
“Don’t mention my daughter.”
“I’m offering you a peaceful life.”
“You tried to take my child.”
“I prepared leverage.”
Claire stared at him.
“That’s what you call it?”
Richard leaned closer.
“Your grandfather understood business.”
“My grandfather would have hated you.”
Richard’s smile disappeared.
“He did.”
Claire heard something in his voice.
Not irritation.
Hatred.
“Is that why you stole from him?”
Richard said nothing.
Claire pushed further.
“What happened between you and my grandfather?”
Vanessa suddenly looked nervous.
Richard glanced toward her.
Claire noticed.
“What aren’t you telling me?”
No answer.
Claire remembered Samuel’s envelope.
Thomas had suspected Richard before he died.
Then a terrible thought came.
“My grandfather’s death.”
Richard’s face remained still.
Too still.
Claire whispered.
“He died in a car accident.”
Vanessa stepped forward.
“Dad, stop.”
Claire looked at her.
Vanessa was frightened.
Not of Claire.
Of Richard.
“What happened to my grandfather?”
Richard picked up the documents.
“Sign.”
Claire didn’t move.
“What happened?”
“Sign.”
“No.”
Richard slammed his hand onto the table.
The sound echoed through the warehouse.
Claire flinched.
Her baby kicked hard.
She placed a hand over her belly.
Richard saw it.
His expression changed.
He lowered his voice.
“Sign the document, Claire.”
Behind a wall two buildings away, Detective Ortiz heard every word.
She signaled her team.
But Claire had one more question.
“Did you cause my grandfather’s accident?”
Richard stared at her.
Then he smiled.
“You really are Thomas Caldwell’s granddaughter.”
That was enough for Ortiz.
Officers moved.
But before they entered, Vanessa suddenly grabbed the ultrasound envelope from her father.
Richard spun around.
“What are you doing?”
Vanessa ran toward Claire.
“Take it!”
Claire caught the envelope.
Richard grabbed Vanessa.
She screamed.
The warehouse doors burst open.
“Police!”
Richard released his daughter and ran.
Claire backed away.
Ortiz pursued him.
Richard disappeared onto the upper catwalk.
Then Claire heard metal groan above her.
She looked up.
May you like
Richard was standing directly over her.
And he had something heavy in his hands.
