Chapter 6 - The Missing Envelope

Hotel footage showed exactly what happened.
When Vanessa emptied Claire’s purse, the ultrasound envelope fell beside the champagne glasses.
Three minutes later, while everyone watched the security screen, Richard Whitmore entered the ballroom.
Claire hadn’t noticed him.
He picked up the envelope.
Then walked away.
Ortiz replayed the footage.
“He knew.”
Claire nodded.
Richard had the evidence.
But Ethan claimed the device required a password.
Claire asked what it was.
Ethan had refused to tell anyone except her.
Ortiz arranged another call.
Ethan gave Claire four words.
“Her first heartbeat date.”
Claire knew immediately.
The date they first heard their daughter’s heartbeat.
For one painful second, she hated that such a beautiful memory had become a password to a crime.
Police obtained warrants.
Richard’s office was searched.
Empty.
His home was searched.
He was gone.
His passport remained behind.
His phone had been abandoned.
But his private aircraft had requested clearance that morning.
The flight was stopped before departure.
Richard wasn’t aboard.
He had anticipated them.
That afternoon, Claire received another message.
COME ALONE IF YOU WANT THE ENVELOPE.
Ortiz told her not to respond.
Claire responded anyway.
WHERE?
The answer came seconds later.
THE CALDWELL WAREHOUSE.
Claire recognized the location.
It was the first warehouse her grandfather ever owned.
Closed for twelve years.
Ortiz began preparing a controlled operation.
Claire looked at her.
“He knows you’ll follow me.”
“Yes.”
“So he’ll be prepared.”
“Yes.”
Claire placed a hand over her stomach.
“Then maybe he shouldn’t see you.”
Ortiz frowned.
Claire explained her idea.
She would go.
But she wouldn’t be alone.
The warehouse was wired with old security infrastructure connected to a neighboring Caldwell property.
Samuel still had access.
Ortiz could watch remotely.
It was dangerous.
But Richard had already broken into Claire’s house.
He had her medical information.
He had spent years stealing from her.
Running would not end it.
At 8:40 P.M., Claire entered the abandoned warehouse.
Richard stood beneath a single hanging light.
He held the ultrasound envelope.
“You look like your grandfather when you’re angry.”
Claire stopped twenty feet away.
“Give it to me.”
Richard smiled.
“You still think this is about money.”
“What else would it be?”
“Your grandfather discovered something before he died.”
Claire’s pulse quickened.
“What?”
Richard lifted the envelope.
“Something worth much more than thirty-one million dollars.”
A sound came from behind Claire.
She turned.
Vanessa stepped from the darkness.
Claire stared at her.
“You were released.”
Vanessa smiled bitterly.
“Temporarily.”
Richard looked at Claire.
“Now we finish what should have happened at the wedding.”
He placed a document on the table.
Claire looked down.
It wasn’t a financial power of attorney.
It was a transfer of ownership.
For Caldwell Logistics.
Claire looked up.
Richard smiled.
“The trust was never the prize.”
May you like
He tapped the document.
“This was.”
