Chapter 12 - Claire Takes the Room

Claire entered the Caldwell boardroom at 9:00 A.M.
She wore navy blue.
No torn gown.
No clutch scattered across a wedding table.
No husband standing silently behind her.
This time she walked in alone.
Samuel accompanied her as counsel.
Board chairman Harold Pierce began speaking.
Claire interrupted him.
“I’ll save everyone some time.”
She placed a folder on the table.
“Yesterday my controlling shares became active.”
Silence.
Harold smiled.
“That ownership is currently disputed.”
“No.”
Samuel slid copies of the trust documents across the table.
“It isn’t.”
Harold’s smile disappeared.
Claire looked around the room.
“Three members of this board received payments from entities connected to Richard Whitmore.”
Nobody moved.
“Those records are now with federal investigators.”
One director stood.
“I think this meeting should adjourn.”
Claire shook her head.
“Sit down.”
He stared at her.
Claire stared back.
He sat.
She remembered standing in the ballroom while strangers searched her purse.
She remembered Ethan refusing to defend her.
She remembered Vanessa’s finger pointing toward her.
She remembered feeling powerless.
That woman was gone.
Claire called for votes.
Harold Pierce was removed.
Two other directors resigned before the meeting ended.
An independent forensic audit was authorized.
By noon, Claire was interim chairwoman of Caldwell Logistics.
Reporters waited outside.
Claire gave them one statement.
“My grandfather built this company by keeping promises.”
She paused.
“Some people confused kindness with weakness.”
Another pause.
“They won’t make that mistake again.”
She walked away.
That evening, Ortiz called.
“We have a problem.”
Claire stopped.
“What?”
“Richard wants to speak with you.”
“No.”
“He says he has information about another account.”
“I don’t care.”
“It’s in your daughter’s name.”
Claire froze.
“My daughter isn’t born yet.”
“I know.”
Claire’s hand moved toward her stomach.
May you like
Ortiz continued.
“And according to Richard, Ethan created it.”
