Chapter 5 - The Marriage Was the Investment

Morning brought no relief.

Claire met with Samuel and Detective Ortiz inside a secure office.

They reconstructed the timeline.

Richard Whitmore began siphoning small amounts from the Bennett Heritage Trust nearly eight years earlier.

When Thomas Caldwell questioned irregularities, the transfers temporarily stopped.

Then Thomas died.

Within months, they started again.

But there was a problem.

Claire would eventually gain greater direct authority over the trust.

Richard needed someone close to her.

Someone she trusted.

His son.

Ethan.

Claire remembered their first date.

He had known her favorite restaurant.

She thought it was charming.

He had known she hated lilies.

She thought he listened carefully.

He had known she wanted children.

She thought they were compatible.

Now she wondered how much had come from research.

“How much did Ethan know?” she asked.

Samuel hesitated.

“We can’t prove everything yet.”

Claire looked at the photograph.

“But he knew who I was.”

“Yes.”

Her phone vibrated.

A voicemail had arrived from Ethan’s attorney.

Ethan wanted to speak with her.

Claire refused.

Then Ortiz surprised her.

“You might want to hear what he says.”

“Why?”

“Because frightened conspirators make mistakes.”

Two hours later, Claire sat behind reinforced glass at the detention facility.

Ethan appeared on the other side.

He looked exhausted.

Claire picked up the phone.

Ethan did the same.

“I’m sorry.”

Claire almost hung up.

“Don’t.”

“I need you to understand something.”

“I understand enough.”

“My father controlled the beginning.”

“And you controlled the rest.”

Ethan closed his eyes.

“Yes.”

The admission hurt more than denial.

“Did you ever love me?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“All of it became real.”

“That isn’t an answer.”

“I was supposed to get close to you.”

Claire said nothing.

“I was supposed to make sure you trusted Whitmore Capital.”

“And marrying me?”

“That wasn’t originally required.”

Claire’s eyes burned.

“So that part was your idea.”

Ethan nodded.

“What about our daughter?”

His face broke.

“She was never part of the plan.”

“Yet you prepared custody papers.”

“My father said if I didn’t cooperate, he would expose everything and make sure I went down alone.”

“So you chose yourself.”

“Yes.”

Claire appreciated the answer only because he finally stopped pretending.

Then Ethan leaned closer.

“There’s another drive.”

Claire froze.

“Where?”

“My father’s private office.”

“What’s on it?”

“The complete ledger.”

“Why didn’t you copy it?”

“I did.”

“Where?”

Ethan stared at her.

“That’s what I removed from the ring box.”

Claire suddenly understood.

The object security footage showed Ethan taking wasn’t the ring.

It was another storage device.

“Where is it?”

“I hid it before the accusation started.”

“Where?”

Ethan lowered his voice.

“Inside your ultrasound envelope.”

Claire stopped breathing.

May you like

The ultrasound picture Vanessa had dumped onto the table.

The envelope had disappeared during the chaos.
