Chapter 10 - The Bride’s Secret

Claire immediately called Ortiz.

They examined Madison’s original statement.

One detail stood out.

Madison repeatedly described the plan as “Vanessa’s arrangement.”

But whenever investigators asked who prepared the legal documents, she became vague.

Ortiz brought Vanessa back in.

Claire watched through the observation window.

Vanessa looked exhausted.

Her wedding had lasted less than six hours.

Daniel had already filed for annulment.

Her father was in custody.

Her family business was collapsing.

Ortiz placed Madison’s note on the table.

Vanessa read it.

Her face changed.

“Where is she?”

“We were hoping you could tell us.”

“I don’t know.”

“Who created the guardianship plan?”

Vanessa said nothing.

Ortiz waited.

Finally Vanessa whispered.

“My mother.”

Claire froze behind the glass.

Margaret Whitmore.

Ethan’s mother.

The woman who had barely appeared in the chaos.

Claire suddenly realized Margaret had disappeared from the wedding before security locked the doors.

Ortiz asked Vanessa where she was.

“I don’t know.”

That was a lie.

Vanessa’s eyes gave it away.

Claire entered the room.

Vanessa looked up.

“Where is Madison?”

“I swear I don’t know.”

“Then where is your mother?”

Vanessa looked away.

Claire sat opposite her.

“Your father is finished.”

Silence.

“Ethan is cooperating.”

Vanessa’s eyes moved.

“Your marriage is over.”

Vanessa flinched.

Claire continued.

“Who exactly are you protecting?”

Vanessa finally broke.

“My mother has a house near Lake Geneva.”

Ortiz immediately sent officers.

They found Margaret.

They also found Madison.

Alive.

Terrified.

And locked inside a bedroom.

Margaret claimed Madison had voluntarily stayed there.

Madison told a different story.

She had gone to Margaret after the wedding because Margaret promised to help her.

Instead, Margaret took her phone and refused to let her leave.

But Madison had hidden one final piece of evidence.

An audio recording.

Margaret’s voice was unmistakable.

“If Claire won’t sign voluntarily, we establish incapacity after delivery.”

Then Ethan’s voice.

“I won’t take her baby.”

Margaret responded.

“You’ll do whatever keeps this family alive.”

For the first time, Claire heard evidence that Ethan had resisted.

It changed nothing between them.

But it changed the case.

And the recording contained something even more important.

Margaret mentioned a doctor.

A doctor Claire knew.

Her obstetrician.
