Chapter 3 - The Plan After the Baby

Claire read the first paragraph twice.

She still couldn’t believe it.

The petition described her as emotionally unstable.

Financially reckless.

Increasingly paranoid.

Potentially dangerous to herself after childbirth.

None of it was true.

But attached to the document were photographs.

Claire crying inside her car.

Claire leaving a therapist’s office after helping a grieving friend.

Claire arguing with Ethan outside their house.

Every normal moment had been photographed and stripped of context.

“They were building a case against me.”

Ethan said nothing.

Claire looked at him.

“For how long?”

“Claire—”

“How long?”

“About five months.”

Five months.

Her hand moved instinctively toward her belly.

Their daughter had been growing inside her while her husband assembled evidence to take that child away.

Marcus called the police.

This was no longer a wedding dispute.

Financial crimes were potentially involved.

Forgery.

Conspiracy.

Illegal access to medical records.

Attempted coercion.

Claire barely heard the words.

She kept staring at Ethan.

Then Madison spoke.

“There’s something else.”

Vanessa looked terrified.

“Don’t.”

Madison ignored her.

“The ring is still upstairs.”

Marcus turned.

“Where?”

“In Vanessa’s suitcase.”

Vanessa shouted.

“You put it there!”

Madison shook her head.

“You told me to.”

The room erupted.

Daniel stepped through the doorway.

“You knew?”

Vanessa turned toward her new husband.

“Daniel, please.”

“You accused a pregnant woman of stealing your grandmother’s ring while you knew where it was?”

“It wasn’t supposed to go this far.”

Claire laughed once.

Everyone stopped.

“It wasn’t supposed to go this far?”

She looked at her torn dress.

“At what point was it supposed to stop?”

Vanessa had no answer.

Claire looked at Ethan.

“Was our baby part of the plan when you proposed to me?”

His face changed.

That was the first question that truly hurt him.

“No.”

Claire waited.

“No,” he repeated.

“I married you because of the trust.”

The words landed brutally.

“But I didn’t expect…”

He stopped.

“To love me?”

Ethan looked at her.

“Yes.”

Claire shook her head.

“You don’t do this to someone you love.”

Police arrived eleven minutes later.

Vanessa’s suitcase was searched with Daniel’s consent because the suite was registered jointly to them.

The diamond ring was found inside a hidden cosmetics compartment.

The theft had never happened.

Vanessa was taken downstairs for questioning.

Madison agreed to cooperate.

Ethan was separated from Claire.

Before officers took him away, he turned toward her.

“My father knows you have the drive now.”

Claire said nothing.

“He won’t wait.”

Marcus stepped between them.

“What does that mean?”

Ethan looked at Claire.

“He’ll start destroying everything.”

Claire’s phone suddenly rang.

Unknown number.

She answered.

“Hello?”

No voice.

Just breathing.

Then a man spoke.

“Mrs. Bennett?”

“Yes?”

“You need to leave the hotel.”

“Who is this?”

The call disconnected.

Claire stared at the screen.

Marcus immediately asked for the number.

Then another message arrived.

A photograph.

Claire opened it.

Her blood turned cold.

It was a picture of her house.

Taken minutes earlier.

The nursery window was visible.
