Chapter 1 - Search Her

“Search her.”

Two words turned Claire Bennett’s humiliation into something much worse.

She stood in the middle of the Grand Hawthorne ballroom with one hand covering her seven-month pregnant belly while Ethan’s relatives formed a circle around her.

Thirty seconds earlier, Vanessa Whitmore had announced that her grandmother’s diamond ring was missing.

Now everyone was staring at Claire.

“Open your purse,” Vanessa demanded.

Claire stared at her.

“What?”

“You heard me.”

Vanessa’s white wedding gown glittered beneath the chandeliers as she pointed toward Claire’s emerald clutch.

“That ring is worth almost two hundred thousand dollars.”

Claire felt every face in the ballroom turn toward her.

“You think I stole it?”

Vanessa folded her arms.

“I think innocent people don’t have anything to hide.”

A few guests whispered.

Claire immediately looked toward her husband.

Ethan stood near the champagne table in his black tuxedo.

He wasn’t angry.

He wasn’t shocked.

He wasn’t even confused.

He was simply watching.

“Ethan?”

He looked at her.

Claire waited.

“Tell them.”

Nothing.

Her heart began beating harder.

“Tell them I would never steal anything.”

Ethan finally spoke.

“Claire, just cooperate.”

Something cold moved through her.

“Cooperate?”

“If you have nothing to hide, this ends quickly.”

Claire stared at the man she had slept beside for six years.

The man who kissed her stomach every morning.

The man who had spent months talking about how excited he was to become a father.

And he couldn’t say five simple words.

My wife didn’t steal it.

Vanessa stepped closer.

“Give me the purse.”

“No.”

Vanessa reached for it anyway.

Claire pulled back.

Another woman grabbed Claire’s arm.

“Don’t touch me.”

The woman pulled harder.

Claire twisted away.

The shoulder seam of her emerald dress ripped.

The sound was small.

But in that ballroom, it seemed deafening.

Claire froze.

Her bare shoulder was exposed.

Someone gasped.

Someone else lifted a phone.

Claire looked at Ethan again.

“Are you really going to stand there?”

Ethan’s jaw tightened.

“Stop making this worse.”

Claire almost laughed.

Making this worse?

His family had surrounded his pregnant wife.

They had torn her dress.

They were accusing her of stealing in front of nearly two hundred people.

And somehow she was the problem.

Vanessa grabbed the clutch.

Claire tried to stop her.

“Give that back.”

Vanessa dumped everything onto a nearby table.

Claire’s phone.

Her lipstick.

Car keys.

Wallet.

Prenatal vitamins.

A folded ultrasound picture.

It landed beside a champagne glass.

The room became strangely quiet.

Vanessa searched the empty purse.

Nothing.

She checked Claire’s wallet.

Nothing.

She even shook out the small cosmetic pouch.

Nothing.

Claire looked around the room.

“There.”

Her voice shook with anger.

“You searched me.”

Vanessa’s expression didn’t change.

“The ring could be somewhere else.”

Claire stared at her.

“You’ve got to be kidding.”

“Maybe in your pockets.”

“My dress doesn’t have pockets.”

Vanessa glanced toward Ethan.

It lasted less than a second.

But Claire saw it.

And Ethan looked away.

Something changed inside her.

This wasn’t confusion.

This wasn’t panic over a missing ring.

They were waiting for something.

Before Claire could speak, a heavy metallic sound echoed through the ballroom.

Click.

Then another.

Click.

The main ballroom doors locked.

People turned.

“What’s happening?”

The chandeliers dimmed.

A mechanical hum came from above the stage.

A massive projection screen slowly descended from the ceiling.

Vanessa’s face changed.

Not much.

Just enough.

“Who did that?”

A man in a dark security suit stepped into the ballroom.

His name was Marcus Hale.

Claire recognized him as the hotel’s director of security.

He held a tablet.

“I did.”

Vanessa stepped toward him.

“This is a private wedding.”

Marcus didn’t move.

“And this is hotel property.”

He looked around the ballroom.

“We received a report of an alleged theft and an assault on a guest.”

Vanessa pointed at Claire.

“She stole my ring.”

Marcus looked at Claire’s torn dress.

“Then the cameras should make this simple.”

Vanessa went pale.

Ethan took one slow step backward.

Claire noticed.

Marcus tapped the tablet.

The giant screen flickered.

A timestamp appeared.

5:42 P.M.

BRIDAL SUITE — CAMERA 4.

Vanessa appeared on the screen.

She was holding the ring box.

Claire stopped breathing.

Vanessa opened it.

The diamond was clearly inside.

Then Madison, one of the bridesmaids, entered the room.

Vanessa looked toward the door.

She handed Madison the box.

The ballroom went silent.

Madison whispered something on the recording.

Vanessa nodded.

The footage ended.

Claire looked at Vanessa.

“You had the ring.”

Vanessa didn’t answer.

Marcus raised the tablet.

“There’s more.”

The next recording began.

6:03 P.M.

The bridal suite door opened.

Ethan walked inside.

Claire felt her entire body go cold.

On the screen, Ethan approached the vanity.

Madison handed him the ring box.

He opened it.

He removed something.

Then he looked directly toward the security camera.

The footage froze.

Claire slowly turned toward her husband.

Ethan was already looking at the exit.

And suddenly she understood.

He hadn’t stayed silent because he was afraid of his family.

He had stayed silent because he knew exactly what was happening.

“Ethan?”

He looked at her.

Claire’s voice dropped to a whisper.

“You planned this.”

Madison began crying.

Vanessa snapped at her.

“Don’t say anything.”

That was enough.

Madison covered her mouth.

“I’m sorry.”

Vanessa spun around.

“Madison.”

“The ring wasn’t the point.”

Claire felt the baby move inside her.

She placed both hands over her stomach.

“What was the point?”

Madison looked at Ethan.

Then at Claire.

“They needed you scared enough to go upstairs.”

Claire frowned.

“Why?”

Madison’s next words destroyed what remained of her marriage.

“Because Ethan had papers waiting for you.”

Claire looked at her husband.

“What papers?”

Madison swallowed.

“Documents giving him control of your money.”

Security officers began moving toward Ethan.

Ethan grabbed Marcus’s tablet.

Then he ran.

“Stop him!”

Guests scattered.

Ethan shoved through the ballroom doors as security unlocked them.

Claire followed as far as the hallway.

“Ethan!”

He reached the elevator corridor.

Marcus caught him near an open maintenance elevator.

Ethan struggled.

Then suddenly stopped.

He reached inside his jacket.

Marcus grabbed his wrist.

“Slowly.”

Ethan pulled out a tiny black flash drive.

Claire stared at it.

That wasn’t the ring.

Ethan looked directly at her.

“This contains the real reason they needed you under their control.”

Claire’s anger disappeared.

For the first time that night, Ethan looked genuinely frightened.

Not of security.

Not of Vanessa.

Of whatever was on that drive.

Claire whispered.

“What did you do?”

Ethan shook his head.

“You still don’t understand.”

“Understand what?”

He looked toward the ballroom.

Then back at his wife.

“They weren’t trying to steal your money.”

Claire felt her stomach tighten.

May you like

Ethan lowered his voice.

“They were trying to make sure you never discovered where it came from.”
