Chapter 7 - THE LAST MOVE

Three weeks after Vanessa left, I thought the worst was behind us.

I was wrong.

People always say the truth sets you free.

They don’t tell you that sometimes the truth starts a war before it brings peace.

For the first time in months, Leo was smiling again.

Not the fake smile he had learned to wear.

A real one.

He started drawing.

He started talking.

He even asked me to help him build a small bookshelf for his room.

It was a simple project.

Just wood, screws, and a few hours together.

But to me, it felt like getting my son back.

“Dad?”

I looked up from the instructions.

“Yeah?”

“Are you going to leave again?”

The question hit me harder than any accusation ever could.

I put the screwdriver down.

“What makes you ask that?”

He shrugged.

“I don’t know.”

But I knew.

Children don’t ask questions like that unless they have been carrying fear for a long time.

I sat beside him.

“Leo, look at me.”

He looked up.

“I made mistakes before.”

His eyes dropped.

“I was busy. I thought working hard was the same as being there.”

I swallowed.

“But I was wrong.”

A long silence followed.

Then he whispered:

“I thought you believed her because you didn’t believe me.”

My heart cracked.

“No.”

I shook my head.

“I believed her because I trusted the wrong person.”

I held his hand.

“That was my mistake. Not yours.”

For the first time, Leo nodded.

Like he finally believed me.

But that peaceful moment didn’t last.

The next morning, my attorney called.

“Daniel, we need to talk.”

His voice was serious.

“What happened?”

“Vanessa filed a claim.”

My stomach tightened.

“What kind of claim?”

“She’s saying you are emotionally unstable and that you isolated Leo from her.”

I almost laughed.

Almost.

But there was nothing funny about it.

“She’s accusing me?”

“Yes.”

I looked around the room.

At the house.

At the life I had built.

The same person who hurt my son was now trying to take him away.

“What do we do?”

“We fight.”

That afternoon, I received another message from an unknown number.

This time, it wasn’t a photo.

It was a recording.

I pressed play.

At first, there was only silence.

Then I heard Vanessa’s voice.

Cold.

Calm.

And unmistakable.

“You need to understand something, Leo. Your father is always too busy. Eventually, he’ll get tired.”

My hand started shaking.

The recording continued.

“You’ll see. People leave.”

Then Leo’s voice.

Small.

Afraid.

“Don’t say that.”

And Vanessa replied:

“I’m saying it because someone needs to prepare you.”

I stopped the recording.

Because I had heard enough.

This wasn’t just a custody battle anymore.

This was about protecting my son from someone who had spent years breaking him down.

But I had one question.

Who sent me the recording?

May you like

And when I found out…

I realized Vanessa had been hiding something much bigger than I imagined.
