Chapter 12 - THE NIGHT EVERYTHING CHANGED

Three days passed.
No calls.
No messages.
Nothing.
The silence was worse than anger.
Because silence meant waiting.
Leo noticed.
He always noticed.
“Dad?”
I looked up from my laptop.
“Yeah?”
“Are we safe?”
That question hurt.
Because every child deserves to believe their home is safe.
I closed the laptop.
I walked over and sat beside him.
“Yes.”
He looked uncertain.
“You promise?”
I nodded.
“I promise.”
This time, I meant it differently.
Not because I could control everything.
I couldn’t.
But because I finally understood what being a father meant.
It meant standing beside him when things were difficult.
Not just building a comfortable life and hoping nothing went wrong.
That evening, we ordered pizza.
We watched an old movie.
For a few hours, we were just father and son.
Normal.
Happy.
Then the doorbell rang.
At 10:47 p.m.
I froze.
Nobody came over that late.
I checked the security camera.
A package sat on the front porch.
No person.
No vehicle.
Just a box.
I opened the door carefully.
Inside was a single envelope.
My name was written on it.
Daniel.
I opened it.
One piece of paper.
One sentence.
“You still don’t know why she chose you.”
My hands went cold.
Underneath was another photo.
Not Vanessa.
Not Marcus.
Claire.
My first wife.
But the picture wasn’t from years ago.
It was recent.
Taken after she had died.
I stared at it.
Impossible.
Then I noticed something.
In the background.
A person standing near Claire’s old house.
Watching.
I zoomed in.
And my heart stopped.
Because I recognized the person.
It was Vanessa.
The woman I thought I had met by chance.
The woman I thought had saved my family.
She had known about us long before I knew her.
I heard Leo behind me.
“Dad?”
I quickly hid the picture.
“What happened?”
I looked at my son.
And for the first time in weeks…
I felt something stronger than anger.
I felt fear.
Because maybe Vanessa’s plan had never started three years ago.
Maybe it started long before that.
Maybe the day I met her…
wasn’t the beginning of our story.
May you like
Maybe it was the moment she began writing hers.
And I had no idea how far she was willing to go.
