Chapter 2 - THE LIE EVERYONE BELIEVED

The room felt smaller than it had ever been.
Everyone was watching.
Waiting.
Vanessa stood near the kitchen counter, perfectly calm.
That scared me more than anything.
A person who had been falsely accused would usually panic.
They would demand answers.
They would ask questions.
But Vanessa didn’t.
She simply looked at Leo.
And Leo immediately looked down.
That was when something inside me snapped.
“Don’t look at him,” I said.
Vanessa blinked.
“What?”
“You heard me.”
The people around us exchanged uncomfortable looks.
Vanessa slowly shook her head.
“Daniel, I think you’re misunderstanding what happened.”
I laughed once.
But there was no humor in it.
“My son was locked inside a dirty kennel.”
“He wasn’t locked.”
Her answer came too quickly.
I stared at her.
“You closed the gate.”
“He needed discipline.”
The words hit harder than I expected.
Discipline.
That was the same word she had used every time I asked why Leo was changing.
I looked at my son.
He was standing behind me, holding my shirt.
Like he was afraid that if he let go, he would disappear.
“Leo,” I said softly.
He looked up.
“Did she lock you there?”
He hesitated.
That hesitation hurt.
Because I knew what it meant.
“Yes.”
Vanessa immediately stepped forward.
“Leo, be careful with your words.”
My head turned.
“Enough.”
The room went quiet again.
I had spent years building a successful business.
I had negotiated million-dollar deals.
I had handled angry clients and impossible situations.
But nothing prepared me for the anger I felt standing there.
Because this wasn’t business.
This was my child.
And someone had made him afraid inside his own home.
I took Leo upstairs.
I didn’t know what I was going to do next.
But I knew one thing.
The truth was coming out.
All of it.

And when it did…
someone was going to have to answer for it.
