Chapter 4 - THE TRUTH BEHIND CLOSED DOORS

“You recorded me?”

Vanessa’s voice was sharp.

Not scared.

Angry.

I looked at her.

“You’re worried about the camera?”

She said nothing.

“Not what you did?”

She walked around the room.

“You’re twisting everything.”

I followed her with my eyes.

“You destroyed something important to him.”

“It was just paper.”

“No.”

My voice shook.

“It was something he loved.”

She stopped.

For a moment, I saw something different.

Not guilt.

Annoyance.

Like Leo was an inconvenience.

That was the moment everything changed.

I realized I wasn’t looking at a misunderstanding.

I was looking at a pattern.

That afternoon, I sat with Leo.

I asked him questions carefully.

Not forcing.

Not pushing.

Just listening.

And slowly, the truth came out.

Vanessa had rules.

A lot of rules.

No drawing after dinner.

No talking back.

No asking questions.

No telling Dad about problems because “Dad has enough stress.”

My hands tightened.

“She told me you would leave if I caused problems.”

I looked at him.

“What?”

Leo looked ashamed.

“She said you were tired of taking care of me.”

The room went silent.

A child’s greatest fear is often losing the people they love.

And Vanessa had used that fear against him.

I hugged him.

“Leo, listen to me.”

He looked up.

“You are never a burden.”

His eyes filled with tears.

“Promise?”

“I promise.”

That night, I made a decision.

Vanessa couldn’t stay.

Not after this.

But before I confronted her, I needed one thing.

The complete truth.

Because something bothered me.

Vanessa was too careful.

Too calculated.

People like that rarely make one mistake.

They leave a trail.

And I was going to find it.

The next morning, I received a message from an unknown number.

One sentence.

“You don’t know what your wife has been hiding.”

Attached was a photo.

I opened it.

And my heart stopped.

It was Vanessa.

May you like

With someone I had never seen before.

And the date on the picture was from before we got married.
