Chapter 14 - THE FINAL CONFRONTATION

The police arrived ten minutes later.

But whoever had been there was already gone.

No footprints.

No vehicle.

Nothing.

Almost like they had never existed.

But I knew better.

People who hide well are not invisible.

They are just careful.

The next morning, I installed new security systems around the house.

Not because I wanted to live afraid.

Because I had learned something important.

Protecting Leo meant preparing for the things I hoped would never happen.

That afternoon, my attorney called.

“We found Vanessa.”

My heart stopped.

“Where?”

“She’s in the city.”

“Is she alone?”

A pause.

“No.”

I already knew what that meant.

“Who is with her?”

“Marcus.”

The same man from the picture.

The same man connected to the money.

I drove to my attorney’s office.

He placed documents on the table.

“We discovered Vanessa and Marcus were working together.”

“For what?”

He looked at me.

“Financial manipulation.”

I stared at the papers.

“She married me for money?”

“Partly.”

“Partly?”

He pointed to another document.

“She also wanted control over your assets because of Leo.”

My stomach turned.

“Why Leo?”

“Because he is your only child.”

Everything became clear.

She didn’t just want my life.

She wanted my future.

My son’s future.

That evening, I received a message.

An address.

Nothing else.

I knew I shouldn’t go.

Every logical part of me said it was a trap.

But then I thought about Leo.

About the kennel.

About the fear in his eyes.

And I went.

The building was abandoned.

Old.

Empty.

I walked inside carefully.

“Vanessa?”

My voice echoed.

Then she stepped out from the shadows.

For a moment, I barely recognized her.

Not because she looked different.

Because I finally saw her clearly.

“You came.”

I stared at her.

“You planned everything.”

She smiled sadly.

“You always were smarter than people thought.”

“Why?”

Her expression changed.

“Because you had everything.”

I frowned.

“What?”

“A beautiful home. A successful life. A son who loved you.”

She stepped closer.

“And you didn’t even appreciate it.”

I almost couldn’t believe her.

“You hurt my son because you were jealous?”

“No.”

Her voice became cold.

“I was fixing him.”

My hands clenched.

“You don’t fix a child by breaking him.”

She looked away.

“He was weak.”

“No.”

I shook my head.

“He was kind.”

That seemed to anger her.

“Kindness doesn’t survive in this world.”

I looked at her.

“Claire believed it did.”

For the first time, Vanessa’s expression changed.

A crack in the mask.

“You always bring her up.”

“Because she loved Leo.”

“And you think I didn’t?”

I stepped forward.

“No.”

The silence between us was heavy.

Then Vanessa whispered:

“You ruined everything.”

I stared at her.

“No.”

I turned toward the door.

“You did.”

As I walked away, she called after me.

“Daniel!”

I stopped.

Her voice changed.

Almost desperate.

“You have no idea what Claire knew.”

I turned back.

“What does that mean?”

She smiled.

And that scared me.

“Ask yourself why Claire was investigating me before she died.”

My blood ran cold.

Because suddenly I realized…

there was one final secret.

May you like

One final truth.

And Vanessa knew it.
