Chapter 5 - THE PERSON BEHIND THE MASK

I stared at the picture for several minutes.
My first thought wasn’t anger.
It was confusion.
Who was this man?
And why did someone send this to me?
I called the number.
No answer.
I tried again.
Nothing.
Then another message appeared.
“Ask her about the money.”
Money.
That word changed everything.
I had trusted Vanessa completely.
Maybe too much.
I checked our financial records.
At first, nothing looked wrong.
Then I found small transfers.
Small enough to ignore.
Large enough to matter.
Thousands of dollars.
Moving every month.
I followed the trail.
And discovered an account I didn’t know existed.
The name attached to it made my stomach drop.
The same man from the picture.
I confronted her that night.
“Who is Marcus?”
Her face changed.
Only for a second.
But I saw it.
“You went through my things?”
“You lied to me.”
She looked away.
“You don’t understand.”
“Then explain.”
Silence.
“Vanessa.”
Finally, she sat down.
“He helped me before I met you.”
“How?”
She didn’t answer.
And that was the answer.
I felt something break inside.
Not because of the money.
Because the entire marriage suddenly felt like a performance.
The woman I thought I knew was someone else.
But then she said something unexpected.
“You think this is about Leo.”
I looked at her.
“It is.”
“No.”
Her voice became bitter.
“This is about you.”
I frowned.
“What?”
“You were never home.”
The accusation hit me.
Because part of it was true.
“I worked for this family.”
“No.”
She shook her head.
“You worked because you couldn’t face being a father.”
The words hurt.
Because they came close to a wound I already carried.
But then she made the mistake.
She smiled.
Just slightly.
And I realized.
She wasn’t trying to help me understand.
She was trying to make me feel guilty.
To distract me.
I stood up.
“You’re done.”
Her expression changed.
“You wouldn’t.”
“I would.”
She stared at me.
“You have no idea what you’re starting.”
Maybe she was right.
Because the next morning, Leo’s school called.
They said someone had contacted them.
Someone claiming to be concerned about my parenting.
Someone who said Leo was unsafe with me.
I knew exactly who it was.
Vanessa.
May you like
And now she wasn’t just hurting Leo.
She was coming after me.
