Chapter 10 - WHAT WAS LEFT BEHIND

For a few seconds, I just stood there staring at the message.
“Check the kennel.”
Three words.
That was all.
But they felt heavier than anything I had read before.
Leo noticed my expression.
“Dad?”
I quickly locked my phone.
“What is it?”
I forced a smile.
“Nothing.”
But Leo knew me too well.
He had spent years watching my face.
“You’re doing it again.”
I looked at him.
“Doing what?”
“Pretending everything is okay.”
That sentence stopped me.
Because it sounded exactly like something Claire would have said.
My son wasn’t just growing up.
He was learning.
And I realized I couldn’t protect him by hiding every difficult thing from him.
So I knelt down.
“Someone sent me a message.”
His eyes changed.
“Is it about her?”
I nodded.
“Yes.”
He looked toward the ground.
“Is she coming back?”
The fear in his voice made my chest tighten.
I put my hand on his shoulder.
“No one is taking you away from me.”
“But what if she says something else?”
I looked him in the eyes.
“Then we tell the truth.”
The next morning, I went back to the old kennel.
The same place where I found my son.
The same place where my entire world changed.
The backyard was quiet.
The party decorations were gone.
The laughter was gone.
Only the old structure remained.
I walked inside slowly.
At first, I saw nothing.
Just dirt.
Old wood.
Broken pieces.
Then I noticed something strange.
One of the wooden panels on the side looked different.
Newer.
Recently replaced.
I touched it.
It moved.
My heart started beating faster.
I pulled the panel away.
Behind it was a small plastic container.
Inside were papers.
Photographs.
And a small voice recorder.
I stared at it.
Why would Vanessa hide this here?
I picked up the recorder.
The battery was still inside.
I pressed play.
At first, there was static.
Then I heard Vanessa’s voice.
“I need you to understand something, Leo.”
I froze.
The recording was from inside the kennel.
“Sometimes people need to lose things before they learn.”
A child’s voice answered.
Leo.
“I said sorry.”
“That’s not enough.”
My hands started shaking.
The recording continued.
“You keep expecting your father to save you.”
Silence.
Then Vanessa said:
“But he won’t always be there.”
I stopped the audio.
I couldn’t listen anymore.
Not because I didn’t want the truth.
Because I already knew.
This was worse than I imagined.
I looked through the papers.
And then I found something that made my blood run cold.
A notebook.
Vanessa’s handwriting.
Pages and pages.
Notes about Leo.
His behavior.
His fears.
His weaknesses.
It wasn’t parenting.
It was observation.
Like he was an experiment.
One page caught my attention.
It said:
“Goal: Make Daniel see Leo as difficult.”
I felt sick.
She wasn’t trying to correct my son.
She was trying to change how I saw him.
She wanted me to believe my own child was the problem.
Then my phone rang.
It was Rachel.
“Daniel, where are you?”
“At the kennel.”
Silence.
Then:
“You found it.”
“You knew?”
“I knew she kept something there.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because I needed you to see it yourself.”
I looked at the notebook in my hand.
“Rachel…”
My voice lowered.
“What else don’t I know?”
Her answer came quietly.
“Daniel, Vanessa didn’t just plan how to control Leo.”
A pause.
“She planned how to control you.”
May you like
And then she said something that changed everything.
“She chose you because of Claire.”
