Chapter 13 - THE TRUTH ABOUT CLAIRE

I didn’t sleep that night.
Not because I was afraid of Vanessa.
Because I was afraid of what the truth might reveal.
For years, I thought my life had been divided into two parts.
Before Claire died.
And after.
But now I was starting to wonder if someone had been standing in the shadows during both.
At 6:00 the next morning, I called the only person who might know something.
Claire’s younger sister, Emily.
She answered after the second ring.
“Daniel?”
Her voice changed when she heard mine.
“What happened?”
I stayed quiet for a moment.
Then I asked:
“Emily… did Claire ever mention Vanessa?”
Silence.
Not a normal silence.
The kind that tells you someone already knows the answer.
“Why are you asking me that?”
“Because Vanessa knew about Claire.”
Another pause.
Then Emily whispered:
“Daniel, I think you need to come over.”
An hour later, I was sitting in Emily’s living room.
She looked nervous.
Almost guilty.
“I should have told you years ago.”
My chest tightened.
“Told me what?”
She opened an old box.
Inside were letters.
Photos.
Documents.
She handed me a picture.
It was Vanessa.
Younger.
Standing outside Claire’s workplace.
I stared at it.
“How?”
Emily took a breath.
“Claire was worried.”
“About Vanessa?”
She nodded.
“She told me someone was asking questions about your family.”
My hands tightened around the photo.
“What kind of questions?”
“About you. About Leo. About your marriage.”
I felt sick.
“Why didn’t Claire tell me?”
Emily looked down.
“Because she didn’t want to add more stress.”
That sounded exactly like Claire.
She always protected everyone else.
Even when she was the one who needed protection.
Emily handed me a letter.
“This was found after she passed away.”
I looked at the envelope.
My name was written on it.
My fingers shook as I opened it.
Daniel,
If you are reading this, I hope it means you found your way back to yourself.
Don’t let guilt convince you that you failed us.
You are a good father.
But please be careful.
Not everyone who offers help has good intentions.
I stopped reading.
Because those words felt like Claire was sitting beside me.
Warning me.
Trying to protect me even after she was gone.
Then Emily said something that made my blood run cold.
“Claire didn’t trust Vanessa.”
I looked up.
“She knew her?”
“No.”
Emily shook her head.
“But she noticed things.”
“What things?”
“She said Vanessa asked too many questions.”
I stared at the letter.
The same woman who comforted me after Claire’s death.
The same woman who said she wanted to help Leo.
Had she been studying us from the beginning?
When I left Emily’s house, I felt like my entire past had been rewritten.
I drove home slowly.
When I arrived, Leo was sitting on the front steps.
Waiting.
“Dad?”
I forced a smile.
“Hey, buddy.”
He looked at me carefully.
“Did you find something?”
I sat beside him.
“Yes.”
“Is it bad?”
I looked at him.
Then I answered honestly.
“Yes.”
His face changed.
“But we’re going to handle it.”
He nodded.
Then he said:
“Dad?”
“Yeah?”
“I’m not scared anymore.”
I looked at him.
“Why?”
He smiled slightly.
“Because you believe me now.”
Those words stayed with me.
Because they reminded me of the one thing I couldn’t lose again.
Trust.
But before I could say anything else, my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
A man’s voice spoke.
“Daniel Carter?”
“Yes?”
“You need to stop looking into Vanessa.”
My grip tightened.
“Who is this?”
The man ignored the question.
“Some doors are better left closed.”
I stood up.
“Where is she?”
Silence.
Then he said:
“Closer than you think.”
The call ended.
And when I looked toward my house…
May you like
I saw movement near the trees.
Someone was watching.
