Chapter 9 - THE ENEMY AT THE TABLE

I couldnât move.
Someone inside my family.
The words repeated in my head.
Over and over.
âWho?â
Lily looked down.
âI donât know the name.â
âYou called me here because you know something.â
âI know pieces.â
âThen give me the pieces.â
She took a deep breath.
âYour father had evidence that someone was moving company money.â
âDiane.â
âYes. But Diane wasnât smart enough to do everything alone.â
I thought about it.
Diane was cruel.
Manipulative.
Powerful.
But was she capable of planning everything?
Maybe.
Maybe not.
âWhat else?â
Lily opened her bag.
She pulled out an old notebook.
âThis belonged to your father.â
I touched it carefully.
The cover was worn.
My fatherâs handwriting was on the first page.
My heart tightened.
âHe gave this to me the night before he died.â
I looked at her.
âYou saw him?â
Lily nodded.
âHe came to find me.â
My eyes filled.
âMy father knew about you.â
âYes.â
âWhat did he say?â
Lily looked away.
âHe said he was sorry.â
I swallowed.
âSorry?â
âHe said he wasted too many years being afraid.â
That sentence hurt.
Because it sounded exactly like everyone else.
Fear.
Always fear.
I opened the notebook.
Most pages were numbers.
Names.
Dates.
Then I saw something.
A name.
A name I recognized.
My hands froze.
âWhat?â
Lily noticed.
âWhat did you find?â
I pointed at the page.
âThis personâŠâ
My voice cracked.
âThis person was at our house all the time.â
Lily looked.
Her face changed.
âWho is it?â
I looked at the name.
And felt sick.
Because it wasnât Diane.
It wasnât a stranger.
It wasnât some hidden enemy.
It was someone I trusted.
Someone who hugged me at my wedding.
Someone who stood beside my family for years.
Before I could say the name, my phone rang.
Ryan.
I answered.
âWhere are you?â
His voice sounded urgent.
âEmma, you need to leave.â
âWhy?â
âI found something.â
âWhat?â
A pause.
Then:
âThe person helping my mother knows where you are.â
I looked around the coffee shop.
My heart started pounding.
âHow do you know?â
âBecause they just sent me a message.â
âWhat message?â
Ryanâs voice became quiet.
âThey saidâŠâ
I waited.
âThey said theyâre coming to finish what they started twenty-two years ago.â
The coffee shop suddenly felt colder.
I looked at Lily.
She was already looking toward the door.
âEmma.â
âWhat?â
Her face went pale.
âThatâs them.â
I turned.
A person was standing outside the window.
Watching us.
And then my phone received a message.
One sentence.
One name.
The name of the person who had betrayed us.
I opened it.
And my entire world collapsed.
Because the person behind everythingâŠ
May you like
was someone I never suspected.
TO BE CONTINUEDâŠ
