Chapter 13 - THE LAST LIE

For a few seconds, nobody moved.

I stared at the picture on my phone.

Ryan.

Bruised.

Trapped.

And behind him

Michael.

The same man who had stood beside my family for twenty-two years.

The same man who told me he was sorry about my father.

The same man who held my mother’s shoulder at the funeral.

A man who had built his entire life on a lie.

“Emma.”

Jake’s voice pulled me back.

“We need to think.”

“No.”

I looked at him.

“We need to move.”

My hands were shaking, but my mind was clear.

For years, people had decided things for me.

They protected me by hiding the truth.

They controlled what I knew.

Not anymore.

Lily picked up the documents from the table.

“Michael won’t keep Ryan alive forever.”

Diane looked at her.

“You sound like you know him.”

Lily’s expression hardened.

“I know men like him.”

Everyone looked at her.

She continued.

“Men who believe they are the smartest person in the room. Men who think fear is the same as respect.”

I looked at Diane.

“And you helped him become powerful.”

Diane looked away.

“Yes.”

That was the first honest thing she had said to me.

Maybe ever.

Ryan’s message stayed on my screen.

“Don’t trust anyone.”

But what did that mean?

Was he warning me about Michael?

Or someone else?

A thought suddenly hit me.

I looked at Diane.

“Why did you call me?”

She frowned.

“What?”

“You said Michael was going to betray you. How did you know?”

Silence.

Too much silence.

Jake noticed too.

“Emma
”

I stood.

“You knew more than you told us.”

Diane’s face tightened.

“I was trying to help.”

“No.”

My voice became cold.

“You were trying to survive.”

She didn’t deny it.

Because she couldn’t.

Diane Caldwell had spent years manipulating people.

But now she was trapped.

And trapped people always showed their real faces.

My phone rang.

Unknown number.

Everyone froze.

I answered.

“Hello?”

Michael’s voice came through.

“Emma.”

My entire body became tense.

“Where is Ryan?”

A soft laugh.

“Still protecting him?”

“He is my husband.”

“He hit you.”

The words shocked me.

Michael knew.

“You know what happened at dinner?”

“I know everything.”

My grip tightened.

“You were watching.”

“Of course.”

His voice was calm.

“That dinner was the moment Diane lost control.”

“You planned everything.”

“No.”

A pause.

“Your father did.”

I froze.

“What?”

Michael continued.

“Your father knew people would eventually turn against Diane.”

“You’re lying.”

“Am I?”

He sounded amused.

“He left clues everywhere. He knew Emma would find them.”

I looked at Lily.

Michael knew about her.

He knew about everything.

“Why?”

“Because your father trusted you.”

The line went quiet.

Then Michael said:

“But he made one mistake.”

“What?”

“He thought love was stronger than greed.”

The call ended.

A location appeared on my phone.

Then one final message.

“Come alone if you want your husband alive.”

Jake immediately shook his head.

“No.”

I looked at everyone.

“I’m going.”

“Emma.”

“I’m done losing people because I’m afraid.”

My mother grabbed my hand.

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Come back.”

I squeezed her fingers.

“I will.”

But as I walked toward the door

I already knew.

May you like

This was not a rescue mission.

This was a final battle.
