Chapter 7 - THE SISTER I NEVER KNEW EXISTED

I stared at my mother.

I waited for her to laugh.

I waited for her to say she was joking.

She didn’t.

And somehow, that hurt more.

“Another daughter?” I whispered.

My mother nodded slowly.

“My father had another child?”

The words felt impossible.

For twenty-two years, I believed I knew my family.

I believed I knew every secret.

I believed my father was a good man who died too soon.

Now everything I knew was falling apart.

“Who is she?”

My mother looked away.

“Her name is Lily.”

“Where is she?”

“I don’t know.”

I stood up.

“You don’t know?”

My mother’s eyes filled with tears.

“I knew where she was once.”

“Once?”

She pressed her hands together.

“Your father found out about her when she was young. Her mother had passed away, and he wanted to take responsibility.”

“Then why didn’t he?”

My mother closed her eyes.

“Because Diane stopped him.”

The anger came back instantly.

“Diane?”

“Yes.”

My mother’s voice shook.

“She told your father that if he brought Lily into our lives, she would destroy everything.”

I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

“So Diane knew?”

“Yes.”

“And she hid her?”

My mother nodded.

“She made sure Lily disappeared.”

My brother Jake leaned against the wall, silent.

Even he looked shocked.

“Why didn’t Dad fight?”

My mother looked at him.

“He tried.”

“Then what happened?”

The room became painfully quiet.

My mother whispered:

“That was the night he died.”

Nobody spoke.

Because suddenly, the accident didn’t look like an accident anymore.

My phone buzzed.

Unknown number.

Again.

This time, I answered immediately.

“Who is this?”

A woman’s voice replied.

“Emma?”

My heart stopped.

“Yes.”

There was a pause.

Then:

“My name is Lily Carter.”

I grabbed the edge of the table.

“You’re
”

“Yes.”

Her voice was calm.

“I’m your sister.”

I couldn’t breathe.

For years, I had been an only child.

Now, in one night, I had gained a sister and lost the version of my family I believed in.

“Why are you calling me?”

Her voice became quieter.

“Because I know what happened to your father.”

My entire body went cold.

“What do you know?”

“I know Diane Caldwell didn’t just steal from him.”

I waited.

“She tried to erase him.”

My hand tightened around the phone.

“Where are you?”

“I’m not far.”

“Tell me.”

Silence.

Then she said:

“Before I meet you, you need to know something.”

“What?”

“Your husband already knows who I am.”

I froze.

“What did you say?”

“Ryan knows me.”

The line went dead.

I slowly lowered the phone.

Jake noticed my expression.

“What happened?”

I looked at Ryan’s old documents sitting on the table.

Then I whispered:

“Ryan knew I had a sister.”

And suddenly, the one person I thought was helping me

became someone I could no longer trust.
