Chapter 11 - THE TRUTH MY FATHER LEFT BEHIND

We escaped.

Barely.

Jake picked us up three blocks away after Lily called him.

When I got into the car, he looked at my face.

He didn’t ask questions.

He just said:

“Who do we hurt?”

Despite everything happening, I almost smiled.

That was Jake.

Always ready to protect.

“Michael,” I said.

His hands tightened around the steering wheel.

“Uncle Mike?”

I nodded.

Jake’s expression changed.

“No.”

That reaction told me everything.

Michael wasn’t just a family friend.

He was family.

And that made the betrayal worse.

When we reached my mother’s house, Ryan was already there.

Standing outside.

Waiting.

Jake immediately stepped between us.

“You have a lot of nerve showing up here.”

Ryan looked down.

“I deserve that.”

“Yes, you do.”

I expected Ryan to fight back.

He didn’t.

That was new.

He looked at me.

“I found something else.”

I crossed my arms.

“What?”

He handed me a small box.

Inside was a flash drive.

“Where did you get this?”

“From my mother’s safe.”

My eyes widened.

“You stole from her?”

Ryan shook his head.

“No.”

He looked ashamed.

“She gave it to me.”

I frowned.

“Why?”

“Because she thought I was still on her side.”

Everyone became silent.

Ryan continued.

“She trusted me enough to show me the truth.”

I plugged the drive into my laptop.

A video appeared.

My father.

I covered my mouth.

Seeing him again after so many years felt impossible.

He looked older.

Tired.

But alive.

The video started.

“If you are watching this, something happened to me.”

My eyes filled immediately.

My father continued.

“I don’t know who I can trust anymore.”

He looked directly into the camera.

“Diane is not working alone.”

My mother grabbed my hand.

Then my father said:

“The person helping her is someone close to me.”

A pause.

Then:

“Someone I considered my brother.”

Michael.

Everyone knew.

But my father wasn’t finished.

“There is something worse.”

The room became silent.

“The person helping Diane knows about my daughter Emma.”

I looked at Lily.

My father knew.

He knew about both of us.

“He knows that if Emma and Lily ever find each other, the truth will come out.”

The video stopped.

Nobody spoke.

Then Ryan whispered:

“Your father was trying to protect both of you.”

I looked at the screen.

All those years.

My father had been fighting a battle we never knew existed.

And we had been living inside the lie.

My phone suddenly rang.

Diane.

Everyone stared.

I answered.

“What do you want?”

Her voice was calm.

Almost gentle.

“I want to make a deal.”

I laughed.

“After everything you did?”

“You don’t understand.”

“No. I understand perfectly.”

She sighed.

“Emma, Michael is going to betray me too.”

I froze.

“What?”

“He never planned to protect me.”

I looked at Jake.

Then Ryan.

Diane continued:

“He wants everything your father built.”

I said nothing.

“Meet me tomorrow.”

I laughed.

“You think I’m stupid?”

“No.”

Her voice lowered.

“I think you’re angry.”

A pause.

“And angry people make mistakes.”

The call ended.

Everyone looked at me.

Because we all knew.

Diane was scared.

And scared people reveal things.
