Chapter 2 - THE SECRET BEHIND THE HATE

The room was silent.
Not uncomfortable silence.
Dangerous silence.
The kind of silence that comes right before something breaks.
Diane stood there, covered in soup and pieces of food, but she wasnât angry anymore.
She was scared.
That was the first time I had ever seen fear on Diane Caldwellâs face.
Ryan wiped blood from the corner of his mouth and stared at my brother.
âWhat is she talking about?â
Nobody answered.
My mother looked at Diane.
For years, my mother had avoided conflict.
She swallowed insults.
She ignored cruel comments.
She smiled through pain.
But that night was different.
That night, something inside her finally snapped.
âTell them, Diane.â
Dianeâs eyes narrowed.
âBe careful what you say.â
My mother laughed softly.
It wasnât a happy laugh.
It was the laugh of someone who had carried pain for too long.
âTwenty-two years, Diane. Twenty-two years I stayed quiet because I didnât want to destroy anyoneâs family.â
My heart started racing.
Twenty-two years?
What was she talking about?
I looked at Ryan.
He looked confused.
âMom?â
Diane quickly turned toward him.
âDonât listen to her.â
My mother shook her head.
âNo. He deserves to know.â
Ryan stepped forward.
âKnow what?â
My mother looked at me.
Her eyes were filled with sadness.
âEmma, sweetheart⊠Iâm sorry.â
Those words scared me more than anything.
Because my mother never apologized unless she believed she had failed me.
âMom, what happened?â
She took a deep breath.
âWhen your father died, Diane was the one who came to our house.â
I frowned.
âWhat does that mean?â
My mother looked at Diane.
âShe didnât come to help.â
Diane crossed her arms.
âSheâs lying.â
My mother continued.
âShe came because she wanted something.â
Ryan looked at his mother.
âMom?â
Dianeâs confidence started disappearing.
My motherâs voice became stronger.
âShe wanted your fatherâs business documents.â
The room froze.
Ryan blinked.
âWhat?â
âYour father and my husband were business partners before he passed away.â
I stared at my mother.
I had never heard this before.
âMom, you never told me.â
âI was trying to protect you.â
Diane laughed nervously.
âThis is ridiculous.â
My mother shook her head.
âNo. Whatâs ridiculous is that after all these years, you still think you can hurt people and walk away.â
Ryan looked between them.
âWhy would my mother want documents from your husband?â
Nobody answered.
Then Jake spoke.
âBecause those documents proved she stole money.â
Dianeâs face changed.
Ryan looked at him.
âWhat did you say?â
Jake stepped closer.
âOur father found out she had been moving company money into private accounts.â
Dianeâs voice exploded.
âShut up!â
Everyone went silent.
Because that reaction said more than words ever could.
Ryan stared at his mother.
âIs that true?â
Diane looked away.
âRyan, donât be stupid.â
And that was when I realized something.
She wasnât denying it.
She was trying to escape it.
My mother looked at Diane.
âYou spent years making me feel poor because you were afraid I would tell the truth.â
Dianeâs hands shook.
âYou have no proof.â
My mother smiled sadly.
âYes, I do.â
She reached into her purse.
And pulled out a small envelope.
Dianeâs face turned completely white.
âWhat is that?â
My mother placed it on the table.
âThe proof you thought disappeared.â
Nobody touched it.
Nobody moved.
Until Ryan slowly picked it up.
He opened the envelope.
And after reading the first pageâŠ
his entire expression changed.
âMomâŠâ
His voice cracked.
âWhat did you do?â
Diane looked at her son.
May you like
And for the first timeâŠ
she had no answer.
