Chapter 6 - THE WAR BEGINS

Within forty-eight hours, everything changed.
People who didnât know me hated me.
Neighbors whispered.
Friends asked questions.
The internet decided I was the villain.
Diane had turned one dinner into a battlefield.
And she was winning.
Ryan came to my house again.
This time, he didnât come with excuses.
He came with evidence.
âShe hired a lawyer.â
I looked at him.
âOf course she did.â
âSheâs planning to sue you.â
âFor what?â
âAssault.â
I laughed.
Not because it was funny.
Because it was unbelievable.
âShe insulted my mother for years.â
âI know.â
âShe humiliated her.â
âI know.â
âBut somehow Iâm the criminal.â
Ryan looked down.
âIâm sorry.â
I stared at him.
âStop saying that.â
âWhy?â
âBecause I need more than words.â
He nodded.
âWhat do you need?â
I looked at the folder in his hand.
âThe truth.â
For the first time, Ryan and I wanted the same thing.
The truth.
But finding the truth meant going back into the past.
And the past had teeth.
That evening, my mother received a letter.
No return address.
No signature.
Inside was a single sentence.
âAsk your daughter who really saved her fatherâs company.â
My mother dropped the paper.
I picked it up.
âWhat does this mean?â
She looked terrified.
Then she said something I never expected.
âEmmaâŠâ
âYes?â
âThere is something I never told you about your father.â
I waited.
She whispered:
âYou werenât the only child he had.â
My entire world stopped.
âWhat?â
My mother looked toward the window.
And then she said the words that would change our family forever.
âYour father had another daughter.â
A daughter.
Another daughter.
Someone who had been hidden from me my entire life.
And somewhere out thereâŠ
May you like
she knew the truth.
