Chapter 10 - THE PERSON BEHIND THE MASK

I stared at the message until the letters became blurry.

My hands went cold.

My heart refused to accept what my eyes were seeing.

The name on the screen.

The person who had been beside my family for years.

The person who smiled at my wedding.

The person who held my mother’s hand when my father died.

The person who everyone trusted.

Ryan’s message appeared again.

“Emma, answer me. Are you safe?”

I couldn’t respond.

Lily looked at my face.

“Who is it?”

I slowly turned the phone toward her.

She read the name.

And her expression changed instantly.

“No
”

The fear in her voice scared me.

“You know them?”

Lily nodded.

“I saw them with your father the night he disappeared.”

My breathing stopped.

“What?”

She looked at the window.

“We have to leave.”

I grabbed my bag.

“Tell me who they are.”

Lily looked at me.

“Your father’s best friend.”

The world went silent.

Because I knew exactly who she meant.

Michael Reed.

The man who gave the speech at my father’s funeral.

The man who helped my mother after his death.

The man who told me, “Your father would be proud of you.”

The man I called Uncle Mike.

“No.”

My voice came out weak.

“That can’t be true.”

Lily grabbed my arm.

“Emma, listen to me. People who hide the truth for twenty years get very good at pretending.”

We rushed out the back door.

The cold air hit my face.

For the first time, I understood something.

Diane wasn’t dangerous because she was powerful.

She was dangerous because she was patient.

She waited.

She watched.

She let everyone else forget.

Then she controlled the story.

My phone rang.

Ryan.

I answered while walking.

“Where are you?”

“I’m with Lily.”

Silence.

Then:

“Good.”

I stopped.

“Good?”

“I knew she would contact you.”

My eyes narrowed.

“What else do you know, Ryan?”

He hesitated.

Too long.

“Ryan.”

“I found Michael’s name in my mother’s old files.”

My stomach dropped.

“You knew?”

“I suspected.”

“Again?”

My anger exploded.

“Why does everyone keep deciding what I can handle?”

“I was trying to protect you.”

“No.”

I stopped walking.

“You were protecting yourself.”

The line went quiet.

Because he knew I was right.

Then Ryan said something that changed everything.

“Emma
”

His voice shook.

“Michael isn’t just working with my mother.”

“What?”

“He owns the law firm representing her.”

I froze.

The man defending Diane

was also the man helping destroy us.

Before I could answer, I heard a car speeding toward us.

Lily grabbed my hand.

“Run.”

A black SUV turned the corner.

The headlights blinded us.

Someone inside shouted:

“Emma!”

The car stopped.

The door opened.

And the person who stepped out made me realize one terrifying truth.

This fight had never been about money.

May you like

It was about silence.

And someone was willing to kill to keep it.
