Chapter 4 - THE PHOTO THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

I stared at the picture for almost five minutes.

My hands were shaking.

The person standing beside my father wasn’t a stranger.

It was impossible.

Because I knew that face.

I had seen it once before.

In an old family album.

“Mom?”

She looked up from the kitchen counter.

One look at my face and she knew something was wrong.

“What happened?”

I placed the photo down.

Her expression changed instantly.

“Where did you get this?”

“You know who this is?”

My mother didn’t answer.

That scared me.

“Mom.”

She sat down slowly.

“That man
”

Her voice broke.

“That man was your father’s closest friend.”

I looked at the photo.

“And why was he standing with Diane?”

My mother closed her eyes.

“Because they were hiding something.”

Before I could ask more, my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

“Hello?”

A man’s voice came through.

“Emma, you need to stop looking into your father’s death.”

My blood went cold.

“Who is this?”

“You don’t know what you’re opening.”

I stood up.

“What are you talking about?”

The man lowered his voice.

“Your mother lied to you too.”

The call ended.

I stared at the phone.

My mother saw my face.

“What did they say?”

I didn’t answer immediately.

Because suddenly, for the first time in my life

I wondered if my mother had been hiding things from me.

That night, I couldn’t sleep.

Every memory felt different.

Every story my mother told me felt incomplete.

At 2:13 in the morning, I heard a noise downstairs.

I grabbed a flashlight.

Someone was inside the house.

I walked slowly toward the kitchen.

My heart was pounding.

Then I saw him.

Ryan.

Standing in the dark.

“Are you crazy?” I whispered.

He turned around.

His face was exhausted.

“I need to talk to you.”

“You broke into my house?”

“Our house.”

I looked at him coldly.

“Not anymore.”

He swallowed.

“I found something.”

“What?”

He handed me a folder.

Inside were documents.

Bank records.

Emails.

Photos.

And one name appeared again and again.

Diane Caldwell.

Ryan looked at me.

“My mother didn’t just steal money.”

He paused.

“She covered up something much bigger.”

I looked at the papers.

“What?”

Ryan whispered:

“She knew your father was going to expose her.”

My heart stopped.

“And?”

May you like

Ryan looked away.

“She was there the night he died.”
