Chapter 7 - THE PERSON BEHIND THE LIES

I didnât sleep that night.
Not because I was tired.
Because every time I closed my eyes, I saw Sophieâs face.
The fear in her eyes.
The way she held onto me like letting go meant losing me forever.
A five-year-old child shouldnât know what it feels like to be abandoned.
But somehow, my daughter did.
At 6:30 in the morning, my lawyer, James, arrived at the house.
He walked in carrying a folder.
A thick one.
Too thick.
I looked at it.
âWhat is that?â
He placed it on the table.
âEverything Rachel has been building against you for the last six months.â
My stomach tightened.
âWhat do you mean?â
James opened the folder.
âShe filed complaints. She contacted your coworkers. She spoke to neighbors.â
I flipped through the papers.
Every page was another lie.
Daniel has anger issues.
Daniel is emotionally unstable.
Daniel is obsessed with controlling the household.
I laughed quietly.
Not because it was funny.
Because it was unbelievable.
âShe made me look like a monster.â
James nodded.
âShe was trying to create a pattern.â
âA pattern for what?â
âFor custody.â
I looked toward the stairs.
Where Sophie was sleeping.
âShe wanted to take my daughter.â
James didnât answer.
He didnât need to.
Then he pointed at one document.
âThis is the part that concerns me.â
I read it.
My hands went cold.
Rachel had already scheduled a custody hearing.
Before the kitchen incident.
Before the police.
Before everything.
âShe planned this.â
âYes.â
James looked serious.
âShe wasnât trying to protect herself after something happened.â
âShe was preparing for something she knew would happen.â
I stared at the paper.
âWhat does that mean?â
Before James could answer, my phone rang.
It was Detective Harris.
The officer who responded last night.
âDaniel, we need you to come down to the station.â
âWhy?â
âWe found something on Rachelâs phone.â
My heart tightened.
âWhat?â
A pause.
Then:
âPhotos.â
I froze.
âWhat kind of photos?â
âPhotos of Sophie.â
I stood up.
âWhat?â
âThousands of them.â
My voice dropped.
âWhy?â
Detective Harris was quiet.
âDaniel, you need to see this yourself.â
At the station, Detective Harris placed Rachelâs phone on the table.
âShe wasnât just taking pictures.â
He unlocked the device.
âShe was documenting Sophie.â
I looked at the screen.
There were folders.
Hundreds of them.
Sophie crying.
Sophie sitting alone.
Sophie hiding in her room.
My stomach twisted.
âWhy would she keep these?â
Detective Harris looked at me.
âBecause she wanted evidence.â
âEvidence of what?â
He opened another folder.
My blood ran cold.
The folder was named:
âPROOF DANIEL IS UNFIT.â
Inside were edited videos.
Videos that made it look like Sophie was afraid of me.
Videos where Rachel asked questions.
Leading questions.
âSophie, does Daddy scare you?â
âDoes Daddy yell at you?â
âDoes Daddy make you uncomfortable?â
My hands started shaking.
âShe was training her.â
Detective Harris nodded.
âLooks like it.â
I covered my face.
The anger was overwhelming.
But underneath the anger was something worse.
Guilt.
Because while Rachel was building her fake storyâŠ
My daughter was living the real one.
Then Detective Harris showed me the last folder.
The name made my blood freeze.
âFINAL PLAN.â
I opened it.
There was only one video.
Recorded two days before everything happened.
Rachel was talking to someone.
A man.
I couldnât see his face.
But I knew the voice.
The same voice from the phone call.
The man said:
âOnce Daniel is removed, we can finally move forward.â
Rachel answered:
âAnd Sophie?â
The man replied:
âSheâll adjust.â
I looked at Detective Harris.
âFind him.â
He nodded.
âWeâre trying.â
Then the video ended.
But before it stoppedâŠ
The man turned slightly toward the camera.
And I saw his face.
May you like
My entire body went numb.
Because I knew him.
