Chapter 11 - THE TRUTH RACHEL HID

I found Rachel before the police did.
Not because I wanted revenge.
Because I needed answers.
She was staying at an old apartment across town.
When she opened the door and saw meâŠ
She didnât look angry.
She looked tired.
âYou shouldnât be here.â
I stared at her.
âYou knew my father was alive.â
Rachel looked away.
âYes.â
âHow long?â
âAlmost a year.â
My jaw tightened.
âA year?â
She nodded.
âHe contacted me.â
âWhy?â
She looked at me.
âBecause of you.â
I laughed.
âThatâs impossible.â
âNo.â
Her eyes filled with something I had never seen before.
Fear.
âYour father hates that you became someone better than him.â
I didnât speak.
Rachel continued.
âHe watched you.â
My skin crawled.
âWhat?â
âHe knew where you worked. He knew about Sophie. He knew about your marriage.â
I stepped closer.
âAnd you helped him?â
Rachel closed her eyes.
âI thought I could control him.â
I shook my head.
âYou thought you could control a man who destroyed his own family?â
She didnât answer.
Because she knew I was right.
âWhy hurt Sophie?â
Her face changed.
For the first timeâŠ
She looked ashamed.
âI didnât mean for it to go that far.â
My anger exploded.
âYou dragged my daughter across the floor!â
âI know!â
Her voice broke.
âI know what I did.â
Silence.
Then she whispered:
âYour father told me you would take Sophie away from me.â
I stared at her.
âHe manipulated you.â
âYes.â
âThen why continue?â
Rachel looked down.
âBecause I was scared.â
The answer almost made me angrier.
âYou were scared?â
âYes.â
She wiped her eyes.
âMichael threatened me.â
My anger paused.
âWhat did he threaten?â
She looked at me.
âHe said if I didnât follow his plan, he would make sure I lost everything.â
I stared at her.
âHis plan was to destroy me.â
She nodded.
âAnd take Sophie.â
My blood ran cold.
âWhy Sophie?â
Rachel looked toward the window.
âBecause your father believes children belong to bloodlines.â
I felt sick.
âHe thinks Sophie belongs to him.â
Rachel nodded.
âHe wants to rebuild the Carter family.â
I stepped back.
âThis is insane.â
âYes.â
Her voice was barely a whisper.
âIt is.â
Then she looked directly at me.
âDaniel, you need to understand something.â
âWhat?â
âMichael isnât trying to win custody.â
I waited.
âHeâs trying to erase you.â
I left Rachelâs apartment with one thought.
Find my father.
Before he found Sophie.
But when I arrived homeâŠ
The front door was open.
My heart stopped.
âSophie!â
I ran inside.
The house was silent.
Too silent.
âSophie!â
Then I saw something on the floor.
Her stuffed rabbit.
Torn.
Next to it was a note.
Three words.
âCOME ALONE, SON.â
May you like
My hands started shaking.
Because I knew exactly who wrote it.
