Chapter 2 - THE CALL THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

I stared at my phone long after the call ended.
The kitchen felt smaller.
The air felt heavier.
Rachel watched me carefully.
âWho was that?â
Her voice sounded calm.
Too calm.
I looked at her.
âSomeone who knows whatâs happening in this house.â
For the first time, Rachel looked uncomfortable.
âWhat does that mean?â
I didnât answer.
Because I didnât know who to trust anymore.
I walked back to Sophie.
She was still sitting on the couch, hugging her stuffed rabbit against her chest.
The same rabbit she had slept with since she was three.
âSophie,â I said softly. âWho was hurting you when I wasnât home?â
Her eyes moved toward Rachel.
Then quickly away.
That small movement told me everything.
Rachel noticed.
âYou see?â she snapped. âSheâs scared because youâre making her think Iâm dangerous.â
I turned around.
âNo.â
My voice was cold.
âSheâs scared because she already thinks you are.â
Rachel opened her mouth.
But no words came out.
That was the moment I knew.
Something had changed between us.
The woman standing in front of me was no longer the person I married.
She was someone I needed to protect my daughter from.
I picked up my phone and called my brother, Mark.
He answered after two rings.
âHey, man. Everything okay?â
I looked at Sophie.
âNo.â
A long silence followed.
âWhat happened?â
I swallowed.
âI need you to come over.â
âDaniel, whatâs going on?â
I looked at Rachel.
âShe hurt Sophie.â
The line went quiet.
Then Markâs voice became serious.
âIâm on my way.â
Rachel stepped closer.
âYouâre calling your family now?â
âYes.â
âYouâre trying to turn everyone against me.â
âNo.â
I pointed toward Sophie.
âIâm trying to keep my daughter safe.â
Rachel laughed.
âYou have no idea what youâre doing.â
Maybe she was right.
Maybe I didnât.
But I knew one thing.
A father didnât need a perfect plan when his child was afraid.
He just needed to act.
Twenty minutes later, Mark walked through the front door.
The second he saw Sophie, his expression changed.
âWhat happened to her?â
Nobody answered.
Sophie ran to him.
âUncle MarkâŠâ
He looked at me.
And I could see the anger building in his eyes.
Rachel immediately stepped in.
âShe had a meltdown.â
Mark looked at the red marks on Sophieâs scalp.
âA meltdown?â
Rachel crossed her arms.
âYes.â
Mark shook his head.
âThat doesnât explain this.â
Rachel looked away.
And that silence said more than words.
Later that night, after Rachel went upstairs, Mark sat beside me.
âYou need to understand something.â
âWhat?â
âSheâs been isolating you.â
I frowned.
âWhat are you talking about?â
âThink about it. When was the last time you spent a full day alone with Sophie?â
I opened my mouth.
Then stopped.
I couldnât remember.
Because Rachel always had a reason.
Sophie was tired.
Sophie was sick.
Sophie wanted mommy.
Slowly, all those moments came back.
And they looked different now.
A knock interrupted us.
A woman stood outside.
I recognized her immediately.
The voice from the phone.
âAre you Daniel?â
âYes.â
She looked nervous.
âMy name is Emily.â
She looked past me.
âIs Sophie here?â
âWho are you?â
She took a deep breath.
âI used to babysit her.â
My stomach tightened.
âUsed to?â
Emily looked down.
âI quit because I couldnât watch what was happening anymore.â
My hands went cold.
âWhat are you talking about?â
Emily whispered:
âRachel wasnât just losing her temper.â
âShe was hiding things.â
Before I could respondâŠ
The upstairs floor creaked.
Rachel was standing at the top of the stairs.
Listening.
And the look on her face told me one thing.
May you like
She knew Emily.
And she was afraid.
