Chapter 4 - THE FATHER EVERYONE DOUBTED

The next morning, my phone wouldn’t stop ringing.

Friends.

Family.

Coworkers.

Everyone had the same question.

“Daniel, what happened?”

But nobody asked because they were worried.

They asked because Rachel had already told her story.

A story where she was the victim.

And I was the monster.

“She said you attacked her.”

“She said you threatened her.”

“She said you were trying to take Sophie away.”

I stared at the messages.

I couldn’t believe how quickly everything changed.

Rachel wasn’t just protecting herself.

She was preparing.

Mark looked over my shoulder.

“She’s controlling the narrative.”

I nodded.

“She knows exactly what she’s doing.”

Then my lawyer called.

A family attorney I had never met before.

“Mr. Carter?”

“Yes.”

“I received a request regarding an emergency custody hearing.”

My stomach dropped.

“From who?”

A pause.

“Your wife.”

I closed my eyes.

Rachel had moved faster than I expected.

“She claims you are aggressive and unsafe around your child.”

I almost laughed.

Almost.

Because the situation was so unbelievable.

The person who hurt my daughter was accusing me.

“What do I do?”

The lawyer’s voice became serious.

“Document everything.”

I looked around the house.

Everything.

The kitchen.

The floor.

The place where my daughter screamed.

I grabbed my phone and started taking pictures.

Then I heard a sound.

Sophie crying.

I ran upstairs.

She was standing beside her bed.

Holding a small notebook.

“What happened?”

She handed it to me.

“I wrote things down.”

I opened it.

My hands started shaking.

Page after page.

Dates.

Times.

Things Rachel had done.

Things I never knew.

Then I reached the last page.

And my heart stopped.

Because Sophie had written:

“Mommy said Daddy won’t believe me.”

I looked at my daughter.

“How long have you been writing this?”

She whispered:

“Since I got scared.”

I hugged her.

And I realized something.

My five-year-old daughter had been collecting evidence.

Because she thought nobody would save her.

A sound came from downstairs.

The front door opening.

I froze.

Rachel.

May you like

She walked into the house.

Behind her were two police officers.
