Chapter 12 - THE MAN WHO NEVER FORGAVE ME

The note had an address.

An abandoned warehouse outside the city.

I knew it was a trap.

Anyone with common sense knew it was a trap.

But this wasn’t about common sense.

This was about my daughter.

I drove there alone.

Every second felt like a countdown.

When I entered the warehouse

I saw him.

Michael Carter.

My father.

Standing under a broken light.

Older.

Gray hair.

But the same cold eyes.

The same eyes I remembered from childhood.

“You came.”

My fists tightened.

“Where is Sophie?”

He smiled.

“No hello?”

“Where is my daughter?”

He slowly walked closer.

“You sound just like your mother.”

I froze.

“Don’t talk about her.”

He smiled.

“There’s the anger.”

I stepped forward.

“Where is Sophie?”

He ignored the question.

“You always thought you were better than me.”

“No.”

I stared at him.

“I just chose not to become you.”

His expression changed.

For the first time

I saw anger.

Real anger.

“You have no idea what I sacrificed.”

I laughed.

“You sacrificed us.”

He looked away.

“I built everything.”

“And destroyed everything.”

Silence.

Then he said:

“You took what belonged to me.”

I frowned.

“What?”

“My family.”

I shook my head.

“You left.”

“No.”

His voice became louder.

“Your mother turned you against me.”

I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

Even after all these years

He still blamed everyone else.

Then I heard something.

A small sound.

A child crying.

My heart stopped.

“Sophie?”

Michael smiled.

“She’s safe.”

“Where is she?”

“You’ll see her.”

I stepped forward.

“Now.”

He laughed.

“You’re still impatient.”

I looked around.

“Where is Rachel?”

His smile disappeared.

“She was weak.”

My blood ran cold.

“What did you do?”

“She couldn’t follow through.”

I moved closer.

“What did you do?”

Michael looked at me.

“She chose you.”

Those words confused me.

Then I heard another voice.

“Daniel.”

I turned.

Rachel walked out from behind a door.

Her face was bruised.

But she was alive.

“Rachel?”

She looked at me.

“I’m sorry.”

Before I could say anything

The lights suddenly went out.

A loud crash echoed.

Then a gunshot.

Sophie screamed.

May you like

And Michael whispered in the darkness:

“Now you’ll understand what it feels like to lose everything.”
