Chapter 5 - WHEN THE TRUTH STARTS FIGHTING BACK

“Daniel Carter?”

“Yes?”

One officer stepped forward.

“We received a report of domestic violence.”

My heart sank.

Rachel stood behind them.

Acting terrified.

A perfect performance.

“He attacked me,” she said softly.

I stared at her.

I couldn’t believe it.

“You’re serious?”

She touched her cheek.

“He became violent.”

The officer looked at me.

“Sir, we need your side of the story.”

I pointed upstairs.

“My daughter has been abused.”

Rachel immediately interrupted.

“See? He’s making things up.”

I looked at the officer.

“My daughter has injuries.”

The officer glanced upstairs.

“Where is she?”

“Sophie!”

A few seconds later, Sophie appeared.

The second she saw Rachel, she stopped moving.

The officer noticed.

That tiny reaction.

That fear.

Everything.

“Sophie,” he said gently.

“Can you tell me what happened?”

Sophie looked at me.

Then Rachel.

Her lips started shaking.

And then she whispered:

“Mommy said if I told anyone
”

She stopped.

The officer kneeled.

“What?”

Sophie grabbed my hand.

“She said she would make Daddy disappear.”

Rachel’s face went pale.

“That’s a lie!”

The officer stood up.

“Ma’am, step outside.”

For the first time...

Rachel looked scared.

As she walked toward the door, she looked back at me.

And she whispered:

“You have no idea what you just started.”

Then she left.

But before the door closed

Her phone fell from her pocket.

May you like

The officer picked it up.

And what he saw on the screen changed everything.
