Chapter 6 - THE PHONE THAT REVEALED THE TRUTH

The officer stared at the phone.
Then looked at me.
âMr. CarterâŠâ
Something about his voice made my stomach tighten.
âWhat?â
He turned the screen toward me.
There were dozens of messages.
Between Rachel and someone saved as âJ.â
I read the latest one.
âOnce he loses custody, everything will be easier.â
My blood went cold.
âWho is J?â
The officer scrolled.
More messages.
More plans.
More lies.
Rachel wasnât just reacting.
She had been preparing.
She had been building a case against me.
The officer looked serious.
âDo you know this person?â
âNo.â
Then another message appeared.
âI canât wait until Daniel is gone.â
I stared at those words.
Gone.
Not divorced.
Not moved out.
Gone.
The police took the phone as evidence.
But I couldnât stop thinking about one thing.
Who was Rachel working with?
That night, Sophie slept beside me.
She refused to go back to her room.
I didnât blame her.
Around midnight, my phone buzzed.
Unknown number.
Again.
I answered.
A manâs voice spoke.
âYou need to stop digging.â
I stood up.
âWho is this?â
âYouâre asking the wrong questions.â
My grip tightened.
âWhat did you do to my family?â
A cold laugh.
Then the man said:
âRachel wasnât the only one watching your daughter.â
The call ended.
I stood there in the darkness.
And I finally understood.
Rachel wasnât the entire story.
She was only one piece.

And whoever was behind thisâŠ
Was much more dangerous.
