Chapter 3 - THE SECRETS INSIDE THE HOUSE

Rachel slowly walked down the stairs.
âWhat is she doing here?â
Emily immediately stepped back.
That reaction bothered me.
Because it wasnât normal.
People donât look terrified when they see someone they barely know.
They look terrified when they know exactly what that person can reveal.
I turned toward Rachel.
âYou know her?â
Rachel forced a smile.
âOf course I know her. She was our babysitter.â
Emily shook her head.
âNo.â
Rachel froze.
âI was Sophieâs babysitter until I realized what was happening.â
The room went silent.
Rachelâs face turned red.
âYou donât know what youâre talking about.â
Emily looked at me.
âShe would lock Sophie in her room.â
My heart dropped.
âWhat?â
Rachel laughed.
âSheâs lying.â
Emily continued.
âShe called it âquiet time.â But Sophie would cry for hours.â
I looked at Rachel.
âIs that true?â
âNo.â
Her answer came too fast.
Too defensive.
Sophie slowly walked into the room.
She was holding her rabbit.
âDaddyâŠâ
I knelt down.
âWhat is it?â
Her eyes filled with tears.
âShe did.â
Rachelâs face changed.
âSophie.â
Just one word.
But the fear in my daughterâs face returned instantly.
I stood up.
âDonât.â
Rachel stared at me.
âYouâre believing a five-year-old over your wife?â
I answered immediately.
âYes.â
That hurt her.
I saw it.
But I didnât care.
Because my daughter had been waiting for someone to say those words.
Emily handed me her phone.
âI recorded something.â
My eyebrows tightened.
âWhat?â
âA conversation I had with Rachel three months ago.â
I pressed play.
Rachelâs voice came from the speaker.
âKids need to learn fear. Otherwise they control you.â
My stomach turned.
Then another voice.
Emily.
âRachel, sheâs a child.â
Rachel answered:
âAnd Iâm her mother.â
The recording ended.
Nobody spoke.
Rachel looked at me.
âYou recorded me?â
Emily shook her head.
âI recorded because I was scared.â
Rachel stepped toward her.
âYou ruined my family.â
âNo,â Emily said quietly.
âYou did that yourself.â
Rachel suddenly grabbed her purse.
âIâm leaving.â
I moved in front of the door.
âNo.â
She stared at me.
âMove.â
âNot with Sophie.â
Her face became dark.
âYou canât keep my daughter from me.â
I looked her straight in the eyes.
âWatch me.â
Rachel smiled.
A strange, confident smile.
Then she pulled out her phone.
âYou really think youâre winning?â
I frowned.
âWhat are you talking about?â
She held up the phone.
âI already made sure nobody believes you.â
My blood ran cold.
âWhat did you do?â
Rachel tapped the screen.
âI told everyone youâre unstable.â
May you like
Then she smiled.
âAnd tomorrow morning, youâre going to find out how much people believe me.â
