Chapter 10: The Woman Who Lost Everything

Chapter 10: The Woman Who Lost Everything

Sabrina sat alone inside her attorney's office.

David Ross placed a folder on the desk.

"The district attorney is offering a plea agreement."

She didn't touch it.

"What if I refuse?"

"They'll proceed to trial."

"And if I lose?"

"You likely receive probation."

"Mandatory anger-management treatment."

"Community service."

"And a permanent criminal record."

She laughed bitterly.

"A permanent reminder."

David leaned forward.

"Sabrina..."

"This stopped being about winning Evan a long time ago."

"It became about destroying Leah."

"And in doing that..."

"You destroyed yourself."

For several seconds...

She simply stared at the floor.

Then whispered,

"I loved him."

David answered quietly.

"I believe you."

"But love without trust becomes possession."

That afternoon...

Sabrina requested one thing before accepting the plea.

She wanted to meet Evan.

One final time.

He agreed.

Not because he wanted closure.

But because he refused to carry hatred forever.

They met inside a quiet park.

No lawyers.

No cameras.

No shouting.

Sabrina looked smaller somehow.

"I owe you an apology."

He remained silent.

"I was jealous."

"I knew something about Leah never left your heart."

"When Ellie called you Daddy..."

"I realized I had been fighting a ghost."

She looked away.

"I can't undo what I did."

"No."

Evan answered calmly.

"You can't."

She nodded.

"I won't ask you to forgive me."

"I'm only asking you..."

"...not to remember me as the worst day of your life."

He looked toward the playground where Ellie was laughing.

Then answered honestly.

"I won't."

"The worst day of my life..."

"...was realizing I'd missed four years with my daughter."

Sabrina cried quietly.

Not because he rejected her.

Because he was right.

She stood.

"Goodbye, Evan."

He nodded once.

May you like

"Take care of yourself."

Neither of them ever looked back.
