Chapter 15: The Choice

Chapter 15: The Choice
That night...
Ellie couldn't sleep.
She climbed into Leah's bed.
"Mama?"
"Was that man really family?"
Leah held her close.
"Being family isn't about sharing blood."
"It's about showing up."
Ellie thought quietly.
"Like Daddy?"
Leah smiled.
"Exactly like Daddy."
The next morning...
Victor violated the restraining order.
He approached Ellie outside preschool.
Before he could reach her...
A familiar voice shouted.
"Step away from the child!"
Evan.
He had arrived early to surprise Ellie with breakfast.
Victor raised both hands.
"I just wanted to talk."
"No."
"You wanted access."
Police officers arrived within minutes.
Victor was arrested without resistance.
As they placed him in the patrol car...
He shouted toward Leah.
"You owe me!"
Leah looked him directly in the eyes.
"No."
"I owed myself the courage to walk away."
The patrol car disappeared.
So did the last shadow from her past.
Later that evening...
Evan sat on the porch beside Leah.
Neither spoke for several minutes.
Finally...
He broke the silence.
"I've been thinking."
"Dangerous."
Leah smiled.
He laughed softly.
"I don't want Ellie growing up between two separate worlds."
She looked at him.
"What are you saying?"
"I'm saying..."
"I don't know what our future looks like."
"But I'd like to find out."
Leah's heart skipped.
"Slowly."
He nodded.
"As slowly as you need."
She reached for his hand.

This time...
Neither of them pulled away.
