Chapter 12: The Hidden Trust

Chapter 12: The Hidden Trust
The black SUV remained parked across the street.
Ellie waved happily, unaware that the two strangers had just interrupted the happiest weekend of her young life.
"Bye, Daddy!"
"I'll see you Tuesday!"
Evan forced a smile.
"I'll be there."
Always.
After Leah and Ellie went inside, the older federal agent extended a sealed leather folder.
"My name is Agent Collins."
"This concerns your late father's estate."
Evan frowned.
"My father's estate was settled years ago."
"So everyone believed."
Collins opened the folder.
"Your father created a second trust six months before he died."
"It was sealed by court order."
Evan's heartbeat quickened.
"Why wasn't I told?"
"Because the trust required one condition."
"What condition?"
The agent met his eyes.
"It could only be opened after the birth of your first biological child."
Silence.
Evan slowly looked toward Leah's house.
Ellie...
"It appears your father suspected something long before anyone else."
Inside the folder...
Was a handwritten letter.
"If you're reading this, then you finally found your child.
Don't waste another minute living for work.
I made that mistake with you.
Don't repeat it.
The trust belongs equally to you... and your child.
No matter when you find them.
—Dad."
Evan couldn't speak.
For years...
He had believed his father cared only about business.
Now he realized...
The old man had been trying to protect a grandchild he would never meet.
There was another document.
A private investigator's report.
Incomplete.
The investigator had been searching for Leah before Evan's father passed away.
But the search ended with his death.
No one had continued it.
Evan closed the folder.
"So my father never stopped looking."
Agent Collins nodded.
"No."
"He simply ran out of time."
That evening...
Evan drove straight to Leah's house.
He handed her the letter.
She read it silently.
Then covered her mouth.
"He knew..."
"He suspected."
"And he wanted Ellie protected."
Leah looked toward her daughter sleeping peacefully on the couch.
"So many people made decisions for her..."
She whispered.
"No more."
May you like
Evan nodded.
"No more."
