Chapter 4: Sabrina's Last Gamble

Chapter 4: Sabrina's Last Gamble

The next morning...

Sabrina sat alone inside her luxury apartment.

She had not slept.

Every television station carried the same breaking headline.

MERCER TECHNOLOGIES CEO WITNESSES DOMESTIC ASSAULT AT PRIVATE RESIDENCE.

The story spread across social media before sunrise.

Her phone vibrated nonstop.

Friends.

Business partners.

Reporters.

She ignored them all.

Instead...

She dialed someone she hadn't spoken to in years.

"Hello?"

A deep male voice answered.

"David."

"It's Sabrina."

Silence.

"What do you want?"

"I need a lawyer."

By noon...

David Ross, one of the city's most aggressive defense attorneys, sat across from her.

"You admitted striking the victim."

"I know."

"Witnesses?"

"Police."

"Paramedics."

"Evan."

"The child."

David slowly removed his glasses.

"You're not hiring me to win."

She stared at him.

"No."

"I need to stop losing."

Meanwhile...

Across town...

Evan drove Leah and Ellie home.

The little girl had fallen asleep in the back seat.

Her head leaned sideways against the child seat.

Without thinking...

Evan reached back during a stoplight.

He gently adjusted the blanket around her shoulders.

Leah noticed.

She smiled sadly.

"She's always cold."

Evan didn't answer.

But his hand lingered on the blanket for another second.

The instinct had come naturally.

Like it had been waiting four years.

When they arrived...

A black SUV waited outside Leah's small house.

Two men in expensive suits stepped out.

Leah immediately became tense.

"Evan..."

"Who are they?"

He recognized them instantly.

"My attorneys."

Leah looked confused.

"I didn't call them."

"I did."

"When?"

"From the hospital."

The taller attorney approached.

"Mr. Mercer."

"The emergency custody paperwork is ready."

Leah's face went pale.

"Custody?"

Evan looked at her.

Not with anger.

May you like

With heartbreaking determination.

"I'm never missing another day."
