Chapter 16: Home

Chapter 16: Home

One year later...

The Mercer Family Foundation opened a new children's center.

Not in honor of Evan.

Not in honor of Mercer Technologies.

But in honor of one little girl.

The sign outside read:

ELLIE'S HOUSE

"Every child deserves to know they are loved."

Inside...

Photographs lined the hallway.

Ellie's first day of kindergarten.

Family camping trips.

Christmas mornings.

Pancake Saturdays.

The memories Evan had once feared he'd never have.

Now they filled entire walls.

During the opening ceremony...

A reporter asked Ellie a simple question.

"What does your daddy do?"

The six-year-old thought very carefully.

Then smiled.

"He keeps promises."

The crowd became silent.

Even the cameras stopped moving for a moment.

Nearby...

Sabrina watched from a distance.

She had completed counseling.

Finished community service.

Built a quieter life far away from the spotlight.

She didn't interrupt.

She didn't approach.

She simply smiled softly when she saw Ellie laughing.

Then she turned and walked away.

Some endings weren't about getting another chance.

They were about accepting the one you had lost.

Margaret Mercer stood beside a framed photograph of her late husband.

"I think you'd be proud of him."

Evan heard her.

"So would I."

Mother and son embraced.

The years they had lost could never be returned.

But they no longer intended to lose any more.

As the ceremony ended...

Ellie grabbed one hand.

Then the other.

"Mama."

"Daddy."

"Come on."

"We're going home."

Evan looked at Leah.

She smiled.

"Ready?"

He squeezed her hand.

"I've been ready since the day she called me Daddy."

Together...

The three of them walked toward the car.

Not because life had become perfect.

But because they had finally chosen honesty over fear...

Forgiveness over regret...

And love over lost time.

For the first time in many years...

They weren't walking toward another secret.

They were simply...

May you like

Going home.

THE END
