Chapter 7: The Results Nobody Could Deny

Chapter 7: The Results Nobody Could Deny

Three days later...

The DNA laboratory completed the expedited analysis.

Judge Brooks ordered both parties back into Family Court.

No reporters were allowed inside.

No cameras.

Only the people whose lives would be changed forever.

Ellie sat quietly beside Leah, swinging her little legs beneath the wooden bench.

She looked at Evan and smiled.

He smiled back.

It felt strangely natural.

The courtroom clerk carried a sealed envelope to the judge.

Judge Brooks broke the seal.

She read silently for several long seconds.

Then removed her glasses.

"According to the certified DNA analysis..."

Everyone held their breath.

"...there is a 99.99998 percent probability that Mr. Evan Mercer is Ellie's biological father."

Silence.

Then...

Leah closed her eyes and cried with relief.

Evan didn't move.

He simply stared at Ellie.

His daughter.

Not emotionally.

Not legally.

Scientifically.

There could never be another question.

Ellie looked confused.

"Did I pass the test?"

The courtroom laughed softly.

Evan walked over and knelt in front of her.

"No, sweetheart."

"We did."

Judge Brooks looked toward Sabrina.

"Ms. Hayes."

"You requested this test."

"It has now confirmed the child's parentage beyond any reasonable doubt."

Sabrina forced herself to nod.

"Yes, Your Honor."

The judge's expression hardened.

"I sincerely hope your motion was filed in good faith."

Because if it wasn't...

The consequences would extend far beyond today's hearing.

Sabrina said nothing.

For the first time in her life...

She had no strategy left.

Before adjourning, Judge Brooks signed the temporary order.

"Effective immediately..."

"Mr. Evan Mercer and Ms. Leah Bennett are granted temporary joint custody."

"The child shall have unrestricted access to both parents."

Then she looked directly at Evan.

"Mr. Mercer..."

"You cannot recover the first four years."

"But you may still influence every year that follows."

He nodded once.

"I won't waste another day."

As they left the courthouse...

Ellie reached up with both hands.

One toward Leah.

One toward Evan.

Without speaking...

Both adults took her hand.

For one brief moment...

They looked exactly like the family they might have been.

May you like

Neither of them noticed...

Someone across the street was photographing everything.
