Chapter 14: The Man From The Past

Chapter 14: The Man From The Past
Three days later...
Agent Collins returned.
"We identified the man photographing your daughter."
Evan's expression darkened.
"Who is he?"
"His name is Victor Sloan."
Leah suddenly froze.
Her coffee cup slipped from her hand.
It shattered across the kitchen floor.
"No..."
Evan turned toward her.
"You know him?"
She nodded slowly.
"He was my biological father."
Silence.
"I haven't seen him in twelve years."
"What happened?"
Leah swallowed hard.
"He abandoned my mother."
"He disappeared before I finished high school."
"So why is he here now?"
Agent Collins answered.
"Because the Mercer Trust became public."
"He believes Ellie is worth millions."
Leah's face turned white.
"He doesn't want a granddaughter."
"He wants money."
That afternoon...
Victor appeared at Leah's door.
He smiled as though nothing had happened.
"My little girl."
Leah didn't move.
"You lost the right to call me that years ago."
Victor sighed dramatically.
"I've changed."
"No."
"You've found someone richer."
Before he could answer...
Evan stepped onto the porch.
"You need to leave."
Victor looked him up and down.
"So you're the billionaire."
"And you're trespassing."
Victor laughed.
"You can't keep me away from my granddaughter."
Evan answered calmly.
"Actually..."
"I can."
He handed Victor a restraining order.
Victor's smile disappeared.
"This isn't over."
He turned and walked away.

Ellie had heard everything from the hallway.
