Chapter 11: The First Father-Daughter Weekend

Chapter 11: The First Father-Daughter Weekend

Friday afternoon...

Ellie stood in Leah's hallway wearing a tiny backpack nearly as big as she was.

She bounced excitedly.

"Daddy!"

"Are you ready?"

Evan smiled.

"I've been ready for four years."

Leah laughed despite herself.

"Don't spoil her too much."

"No promises."

Ellie gasped dramatically.

"Mama!"

"He already bought dinosaur pancakes!"

Evan looked guilty.

"I may have watched twenty parenting videos."

Leah couldn't help laughing.

"You watched tutorials?"

"Forty-three."

She shook her head.

"You really are trying."

"I intend to keep trying."

Their first stop wasn't an amusement park.

Or a toy store.

It was the grocery store.

Ellie insisted they shop together.

She carefully placed bananas into the cart.

Then whispered,

"Mama always checks for the yellow ones."

Evan copied her.

"What else does Mama do?"

"She reads stories with funny voices."

He made a mental note.

That night...

They built a blanket fort in Evan's living room.

Ellie fell asleep halfway through a story.

Still holding his finger.

He didn't move for almost an hour.

Afraid she'd wake up.

When she finally stirred...

She whispered without opening her eyes,

"I dreamed you came sooner."

Evan closed his eyes.

"So did I."

The next morning...

He drove her back to Leah's house.

Ellie hugged him tightly.

"See you Tuesday?"

"I'll be here."

"You promise?"

"I promise."

She smiled.

"Pinky promise."

He hooked his finger around hers.

"Pinky promise."

As Leah watched from the porch...

She realized something remarkable.

The little girl who had spent four years wondering what it felt like to have a father...

Had stopped wondering.

She knew.

But just as peace finally seemed possible...

A black SUV pulled up across the street.

Two federal agents stepped out.

One of them approached Evan.

"Mr. Mercer?"

"We need to speak with you."

"It's about your late father's estate."

The agent held up an old sealed file.

"It concerns a trust that names one additional legal heir."

Evan frowned.

"Additional heir?"

The agent looked toward Ellie.

May you like

"I'm afraid..."

"This changes everything."
