Chapter 10 - The Line Arthur Crossed

I drove to the penthouse.

Arthur ordered me to stay away.

I ignored him.

Police surrounded the building but refused to enter.

Vanessa had threatened to expose documents implicating half the city government if anyone came upstairs.

Arthur arrived through a service tunnel.

I met him in the basement.

“You told Bella to lie to Vanessa?”

“She volunteered.”

“She is seven.”

“She wanted to help catch the woman who killed her mother.”

“She wanted her father to protect her.”

Arthur looked away.

That was the moment I understood him.

He loved Bella.

But he had spent his entire life treating every problem like a business war.

People became assets.

Pain became leverage.

Even his own daughter had become part of the strategy.

“You’re not better than Vanessa if you keep using Bella,” I said.

His face tightened.

“I never hurt her.”

“You made her responsible for saving all of us.”

That landed.

We reached the penthouse through a private elevator.

Inside, the rooms were dark.

Bella sat alone in the living room.

Vanessa was gone.

On the coffee table lay the fake microfilm and a phone playing a recorded message.

Vanessa’s voice filled the room.

“Arthur, your father wants the company. I want freedom. Sarah wants her mother. And Bella wants the truth.”

A second video began.

It showed Evelyn alive inside a hospital room after the crash.

She was injured but conscious.

Richard stood beside her bed.

So did Arthur’s mother, Margaret Sterling.

Margaret injected something into Evelyn’s IV.

Evelyn’s body went still.

Arthur staggered backward.

“My mother?”

Vanessa’s message continued.

“The car crash didn’t kill Evelyn. Your family did.”

Then the penthouse windows exploded inward.

Smoke filled the room.

Someone had launched a gas canister through the glass.

May you like

Bella collapsed.
