Chapter 19 - Her First Speech

At ten years old, Bella stood before hundreds of people at the opening of the Evelyn Sterling Center for Children.

Arthur waited beside the stage.

I stood in the front row.

Bella stepped toward the microphone.

For a moment, she said nothing.

The audience waited.

Years earlier, silence had been her shield.

Now it belonged to her.

She chose when to break it.

“My mother died because powerful people thought nobody could stop them,” she began.

Arthur lowered his head.

“But one person did stop someone.”

Bella looked at me.

“She wasn’t rich.”

“She wasn’t important to the people in charge.”

“She was scared.”

“But she came through the door anyway.”

My eyes burned.

Bella continued.

“People say heroes aren’t afraid.”

“That isn’t true.”

“Heroes are afraid, and they still move.”

The audience rose to its feet.

Arthur did not clap immediately.

He was crying.

Quietly.

Without hiding it.

Bella stepped away from the microphone and walked into his arms.

For the first time, the Sterling name was not connected to money, weapons, lies, or power.

May you like

It belonged to a child telling the truth.
