Chapter 16 - The House Without Walls

One year later, Sterling Manor was sold.
Arthur said the mansion held too many secrets.
He moved into a smaller home near the coast.
Smaller, in Arthur’s language, still meant eight bedrooms.
But it had warm wooden floors, open windows, and no hidden cameras.
Arthur created an independent foundation for families affected by corporate corruption.
He placed every remaining share of Sterling Heavy Industries into a public trust.
The board hated him.
The public could not decide whether he was brave or foolish.
Arthur no longer cared.
Bella returned to school.
She spoke more every week.
Not because anyone forced her.
Because she finally felt safe enough to choose words.
I stayed in her life.
Not as a nanny.
Not as an employee.
Arthur offered me the position of director at the foundation.
I accepted under one condition.
“No secrets.”
He nodded.
“No secrets.”
For months, nothing romantic happened between us.
That surprised everyone.
The press expected a scandal.
A billionaire and the nanny who saved his daughter made an easy headline.
But real trust grew slowly.
It began with coffee in the kitchen.
Arguments over foundation budgets.
Late-night conversations after Bella’s nightmares.
One evening, Arthur asked me why I had stayed after everything.
I looked through the window.
Bella was outside chasing fireflies.
“Because leaving would have taught her that everyone disappears.”
Arthur looked at his daughter.
Then at me.
“I don’t deserve either of you.”
“That isn’t your decision.”
He smiled.
A real smile.
The first I had ever seen.
He did not ask me to marry him.
Not then.
Instead, he asked if I wanted to build something honest with him.
May you like
I said yes.
