Chapter 1: The Smell of Burning Hair

Chapter 1: The Smell of Burning Hair

You never forget the smell of burning hair.

Sharp. Bitter. Wrong.

The kind of smell that makes your body react before your mind can.

I was halfway down the marble hallway with a basket of freshly folded towels when it hit me.

My stomach dropped.

It was six o'clock on a Tuesday.

At the Sterling mansion, that meant one thing.

Preparation.

Arthur Sterling—CEO of Sterling Heavy Industries—was hosting a charity gala that night. His fiancée, Vanessa, was upstairs getting his seven-year-old daughter ready.

Bella hadn't spoken since her mother died two years ago.

I let the laundry basket crash to the floor.

White towels scattered across the polished marble.

I ran.

My shoes pounded against the endless hallway.

I couldn't afford to lose this job.

My rent was two months overdue.

My mother depended on the insurance it provided to pay for dialysis.

Vanessa had made one rule painfully clear on my first day.

"You're the help, Sarah. Feed the child. Clean the house. Stay invisible."

I had obeyed.

Until now.

The smell grew stronger.

I shoved open the bathroom doors.

Steam still floated in the air.

Mixed with it was the unmistakable odor of scorched hair.

I froze.

Bella sat on a velvet stool.

Her tiny fingers gripped the edge so tightly her knuckles had turned white.

Tears filled her eyes.

She stared silently into the mirror.

Behind her stood Vanessa.

Perfect makeup.

Silk robe.

Diamond necklace already sparkling for the gala.

In one hand she held a professional curling iron turned all the way up.

Heat shimmered from the barrel.

"I told you to stop moving, you little mute," Vanessa whispered.

Her voice wasn't loud.

That made it even colder.

She grabbed a section of Bella's soft blond hair.

She didn't curl it.

She clamped the iron near the roots...

And held it there.

Sssssss...

Smoke curled into the air.

Bella's mouth opened in a silent scream.

Her body jerked.

Vanessa yanked her back by the hair.

"Arthur wants you to look perfect," she said, admiring herself in the mirror.

"If you can't be perfect... then at least learn to obey."

She slowly moved the iron closer to Bella's ear.

"If you move again... next time I burn this."

Everything inside me snapped.

I didn't think about my rent.

I didn't think about my mother's medical bills.

I didn't think about the fact that Arthur Sterling was one of the most powerful men in the state.

I saw a terrified little girl.

I crossed the room in two steps.

"Get away from her!"

I slammed my shoulder into Vanessa with every ounce of strength I had.

She screamed.

The curling iron flew from her hand.

It bounced across the marble floor.

Vanessa lost her balance and crashed into the bathtub.

I didn't even look at her.

I grabbed Bella and pulled her into my arms.

She shook so violently I could barely hold her.

"It's okay," I whispered.

"I've got you."

The smell of burnt hair made my stomach turn.

Vanessa staggered to her feet.

Her elegant smile was gone.

Only rage remained.

"You stupid little bitch!"

She lunged toward me.

"You were burning her!" I shouted.

"I saw everything!"

"I was fixing her hair!"

She looked at the red mark already forming on her arm.

"You assaulted me."

Then she laughed.

A slow, ugly laugh.

"You're finished, Sarah."

"Not just fired."

"I'll have you arrested."

"I'll make sure nobody in this city ever hires you again."

She leaned closer.

"And your sick mother?"

"Good luck paying for dialysis from a jail cell."

Ice spread through my chest.

She knew.

She had gone through my personal records.

"Please..." I whispered.

"Look at Bella's hair."

A jagged, burnt patch stood out against the child's golden curls.

Vanessa barely glanced at it.

"She moved."

"It was an accident."

"But attacking me?"

"That wasn't."

She calmly walked to the wall intercom.

Pressed the button.

"Security."

"Call the police."

"The nanny attacked me..."

She looked directly at Bella.

"...and tried to hurt Mr. Sterling's daughter."

"What?"

My voice cracked.

"You're lying!"

Vanessa smiled.

Cold.

Confident.

"Who do you think Arthur will believe?"

"His future wife..."

"...or the desperate nanny he hired out of pity?"

She reached for Bella.

"Give her to me."

"No!"

I slapped her hand away.

Bella buried her face against my apron.

"I'm not leaving," I said.

"Not until Mr. Sterling gets here."

Vanessa laughed.

"You really think Arthur cares?"

"He's downstairs with investors."

"He barely notices the child."

"That's why he needs me."

"To fix this family."

She raised her hand.

"I'm going to teach you your—"

Click.

The bedroom door slowly opened.

The room fell silent.

Arthur Sterling stood in the doorway.

Still wearing his tuxedo.

Tie hanging loose.

His expression unreadable.

The temperature in the room seemed to drop.

Vanessa instantly burst into tears.

"Arthur!"

"Thank God!"

"Sarah attacked me!"

"She tried to burn Bella!"

"When I stopped her, she shoved me!"

"Look at my arm!"

She rushed toward him, crying like the perfect victim.

"I was terrified."

"She's unstable."

"You have to fire her."

My heart pounded so hard it hurt.

This was it.

Why wouldn't he believe her?

She was beautiful.

Rich.

His fiancée.

I was nobody.

Bella looked up at her father.

Silent.

Pleading.

Arthur didn't move.

He didn't comfort Vanessa.

He walked past her...

Without even looking.

Straight toward me.

I braced for the worst.

Instead...

He looked down at my hand.

"You're burned."

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

Only then did I notice the blister stretching across the back of my hand.

"It doesn't matter," I said quickly.

"Mr. Sterling... please... I would never hurt Bella."

"Be quiet."

He gently touched Bella's burnt hair.

She leaned into his hand.

He looked at the scorched curls.

Then at the curling iron lying on the floor.

Finally...

He turned toward Vanessa.

For the first time...

She looked afraid.

"Arthur..." she forced a smile.

"Just fire her."

"We're going to be late."

Without saying a word...

Arthur reached into his pocket.

Pulled out his phone.

The screen was already on.

A live security feed.

Vanessa's face turned white.

"What... is that?"

"I installed hidden cameras three days ago."

"They record video."

"And audio."

Silence.

Heavy enough to crush the room.

"I watched everything."

"I saw you burn my daughter."

"I heard every word."

"I watched Sarah save her."

Vanessa stumbled backward.

"No... Arthur... I can explain..."

"It was discipline!"

"She needs a mother!"

"You tortured my daughter."

His voice never rose.

That somehow made it even more terrifying.

He tapped the screen.

"Send them in."

Heavy boots thundered down the hallway.

Two police officers entered.

Behind them stood Arthur's head of security.

Vanessa panicked.

"The gala!"

"The press!"

"Think about your reputation!"

Arthur looked at her with pure disgust.

"You touched my daughter."

"You think I care about a party?"

He nodded once.

"Arrest her."

"And document everything."

As the officers dragged away Vanessa's screams...

Arthur turned back to me.

I was still holding Bella.

My hands wouldn't stop shaking.

"Sarah."

"Yes... sir?"

"You're fired."

The words hit harder than a punch.

My vision blurred.

"What...?"

Arthur slowly knelt until we were eye level.

For the first time...

I saw something human in his eyes.

Regret.

Gratitude.

"You're fired as Bella's nanny."

He stood and offered me his hand.

"Because someone willing to protect my daughter isn't an employee anymore."

"You're family."

I stared at him in disbelief.

He gave Bella a gentle smile.

"We'll talk later."

"First, we'll treat your hand."

"And then..."

His face darkened.

"I'll tell you why Vanessa was really here."

I frowned.

"What do you mean?"

Arthur watched the police drag his screaming fiancée down the hallway.

"Vanessa was never just my fiancée."

"She was my only link..."

"...to the people who murdered my wife."

"And tonight..."

May you like

He looked at me.

"...thanks to you, I finally have enough evidence to destroy them."
