Chapter 17 - The Last Recording

Two years after Margaret’s conviction, workers demolished an abandoned Sterling warehouse.

Inside a sealed wall, they found an old cassette recorder.

It contained Evelyn’s final message.

Arthur, if you find this, I need you to understand something.

Your father and mother built their empire on fear.

You believed power meant controlling everything.

You were wrong.

Power is knowing when to let someone tell you the truth.

Even when it hurts.

Bella deserves a father who listens.

Not a king.

Arthur played the recording once.

Then he gave it to Bella.

She held it carefully.

“Do you miss her?” she asked.

“Every day.”

“Do you love Sarah?”

Arthur looked at me across the room.

“Yes.”

Bella nodded seriously.

“Then don’t lie to her.”

“I won’t.”

She turned to me.

“And you don’t leave.”

“I won’t.”

Bella considered both promises.

Then she smiled.

“Okay.”

That evening, Arthur took us to the cliff where Evelyn used to watch the ocean.

He carried no ring.

No photographers waited nearby.

There was no dramatic speech.

He simply took my hand.

“I spent most of my life believing love was another thing I could lose.”

“And now?”

“Now I know it’s something I have to earn.”

He asked me to marry him.

I said yes.

Not because he was powerful.

Not because he was wealthy.

May you like

But because he had finally learned to listen.
